Recounting Our Hero's last adventure, A young man strikes out into the dangerous, ungoverned land of Axegaurd to make a name for himself. Formerly a librarian from the frigid northern kingdom of Holuthheim , This hero uses his smarts and his skills with a blade to tackle the quests he was given. At his side is a former soldier, a Beastwoman with a foul mouth, a noticeable drinking problem and an unmatched skill with hand to hand weapons. Khyber, as she is called, offered to temporarily join our hero but agreed to stay by his side a little longer, so long as he'd provided an adequate amount of alcohol . Our Hero's second party member is a neurotic but well meaning mage. Her name is Xiphos and the esoteric school of magic she follows demands the worship of strange beings of light that grant her holy abilities. She is here to fight the worshipers of darkness who plague these lands, even if she is anxious about everything. Including fighting darkness.

Our previous tale ended with a beginning, a farmer offered nearly all the coin to his name to Our Hero and his party. The job, on paper, is simple "get rid of the succubus that has been attacking my town by any means necessary". What this band of heroes will soon find out is that this job will not be as simple as they believed it to be. For night has fallen on this lawless lands, and in the cover of darkness the succubus lurks

The farmer was so desperate in fact, he even offered his horse to Our Hero and his party. So long as she gets back in one piece. No one on that horse wanted to get there after the moons rose but alas, their beautiful pale blue light served as an unfortunate reminder for the conditions they would be working in

near darkness

to stave off any doubt or worry he may have had, Our Hero recounts what the farmer told him about the succubus. That is has taken the form of the baker, Mariam, a beastwoman who is deer like in features. However, the real Mariam has one, escaped the city, and two, lacks long, white, shaggy hair. The farmer also stated that the succubus is likely to plundering a farm, or salted pork storehouse. "Anywhere there is meat, there is going to be a succubus" Our Hero recalls the farmer saying

When Our Hero, Khyber and Xiphos finally make it to the village, they are struck with a feeling most unnerving. A feeling not at all helped by the silence, there were no noises coming from the forest, no leaves rustling, no twigs snapping. Just the sound of hooves clopping and weapons clattering as they all cautiously dismounted the horse...

"So, what's the plan?"
Khyber asks, an ounce of worry in her voice

Our Hero does not admit this outright, but he does not have a solid plan. To remedy this he takes inventory of what's in his bag, as of now Our Hero has

Mountainroot (x2)
>a bitter tasting root used to make stamina potions

Gerske Flowers (x4)
>used to make herbal tea, it's useless for now, unless a strong floral aroma is needed

Ground Brimstone (x1)
>wrapped in cloth to cover the pungent sulfur smell, might be useful in attracting demons

Undine Water (x1)
>has the ability to wash away magical qualities, though to what extent Our Hero isn't quite sure yet

Invisibility Potion (x1)
>self explanatory, but makes the drinker completely blind for the duration of the potion...what use does that serve anyways!?

Potion of Ignition (x1)
>also self explanatory. It could be used as a last ditch effort but Our Hero highly doubts the villagers want to come back to ashes after the succubus has been dealt with

Potion of Healing (x1)
>It should only be used when absolutely necessary! That being said, healing potions are similar to blood in both smell and taste, this could be useful in attracting a carnivore...or it could attract the succubus when they are trying to tend to someone wounded. Best to consider the risks before using it

"I believe I have something useful too..."
Xiphos nervously adds, brandishing a potion of shining that she has been holding onto
"I'm not sure what it could be used for though..."

Our Hero tells Xiphos that her input is appreciated, and he's glad she's pitching in. Xiphos smiles, though it's covered by her mask

with all of this considered, Our Hero starts formulate some plans, they could...

>1.) investigate the butchers shop in front of them, it's likely been picked clean but could give some evidence as to where the succubus went
>2.) entice the succubus with the brimstone and use it to lure the succubus into a place where it can be dealt with
>3.)keep on guard and venture through the woods to the rest of the village, and plan from there.

(awww thank you very much!)

Though it may seem risky, Our Hero and his party ventures deeper into the woods. With axes, hammers and daggers raised they all walk with caution, ready for an attack from a demon at any moment...

But there is nothing, nothing but silence. Khyber comments that this is "Fuckin creepy" and Our Hero concurs. Unscathed but a little more anxious the party stumbles on rest of the village and Our Hero takes note of what he sees. There is the bakery, and home of the person the succubus has copied, two houses, a tavern, a market an armory and a storage house

There are many possibilities of attack here, but also many chances to be attacked. Some plans may be riskier than others but Our Hero formulates some nonetheless. Right now, Our Hero could...

>1.) Investigate the bakers house, investigating what is essentially ground zero of this whole problem may be risky, but could also provide important details about the enemy they are fighting
>2.) Prepare for a fight in the farm. Get this over with as fast as possible, lure the succubus there if he has to. This is also risky but will get this done as quickly as possible. Someone's bound to get hurt doing this...
>3). Check the armory for anything that may help. he is free to return whatever he borrowed and there's no risk in checking after all! That being said, there is a chance the succubus is hiding there...

Our Hero, Khyber and Xiphos decide to check the armory. Even with the knowledge that the monster could be hiding there, gathering whatever they can to fight this thing is crucial. Our Hero, dagger in hand, slowly opens the door and....

...Nothing, Our Hero begins to wonder if there's even a succubus here. Unfortunately, he begins to let his guard down. After notifying Khyber and Xiphos that it's all good the two file in and look for anything they can use to help with this quest. While it's good to have extra weapons for backup it's not something they need at the moment.

Khyber points out the locked chest in the room
"Hey, hand me your dagger. that lock on the chest looks easy to pick. I'd use my knife but it's too big"

Xiphos also chimes in, asking Our Hero a question
"Can you help me Identify these potions?"

Our Hero also notices the bear trap on the shelf, which could be useful in setting up a trap. With the room successfully scouted and no succubus found, what should Our Hero do?

>1.) Hand Khyber his dagger and help her open the chest
>2.) Identify and collect the potions with Xiphos

Lure it with meat... possibly with Swordboy as bait? Then Xiphos can use holy magic on it while the other two lock it down, maybe?
>>
>>6416319
Right
Looking at the room, it seems the succubus hasn't been here, given the lack of mess (Or atleast she hasn't rifled through this guys stuff)
The potions aren't too likely to be combat related and I'd hate to use someone elses potions if we don't have to
How useful the bear trap is is dependant on the succubusses intelligence, which is currently unknown

We should stand guard outside while the other 2 do their plans. It would all be pointless if we get snuck up on, and if we saw or heard the succubus moving through town it would be a great help

you're not wrong, I would have loved to give a status update when I got moved but my internet isn't going to be on until like Wednesday. I tried using my phones hotspot but it barred me from doing that until I realized I just had to verify my email. Anyways the stuff I used to draw is still in the moving trucks and that won't be here until tommorow, I again want to apologize for such a long hiatus at the beginning of this quest. I thought I could get pretty far until I had to stop but I planned wrong. I'm hoping regular updates will continue in the next week or two but I'd hate to make people wait even longer. Our Hero opts to hand Khyber the dagger, and informs her that he plans to keep watch outside the armory. She thanks Our Hero for the dagger and tells him to "not get torn to shreds out there". Our Hero assumes she just has a dark sense of humor, but the thought does worry him, he would prefer to have an open casket after all. That aside, he walks up to Xiphos.

"Oh, have you come to help me identify these?"

Our Hero gives his opinion, stating that they are likely not combat potions and if they could save the villagers resources they should. But he adds that it wouldn't hurt to take for later use. Xiphos agrees, taking one of the two bottles, It was a brown, murky liquid that had a strong smell that burned the nose. A faint note of alcohol was part of the aroma but it clearly was not for recreational use. Not even Khyber would drink this, it's best to only use it when the situation is dire.

>Mystery Potion has been added to Xiphos's inventory!

After that, Our Hero tells Xiphos that he plans to wait and watch outside the armory. Given that this armory has clearly not had a succubus in it he sees it best to watch and wait for the monster to come to them, Xiphos offers to tag along, Our Hero sees no issue in it

When the two make it outside, a small conversation starts. Xiphos begins to ask Our Hero about any plans he may have formulated while waiting, he responds with one

"Are you aware of that bear trap in the armory"

"Yes, do you intend to trap the beast with it?"

"I do intend to do that, yes"

Xiphos thinks for a bit, then responds
"I see no issue, but what if this beast is more intelligent than we initially thought?"

This rebuttable stumps Our Hero, but upon checking his bag a new plan forms
"You're aware of demons love of brimstone correct?"

"I am, that devil mage tower you rescued me from reeked of it..."
The implications of Our Hero's response then dawn on her
"I'll take it you helped yourself to some whilst you where there?"

Our Hero only nods, smiling

Xiphos's eyes widen, exited at the plan that was shaping up
"We should tell Khyber! I believe she would be more than happy to hear this plan, and if she finds something helpful in that chest it could turn the situation in our favor!"

Just as the two where about to go inside and inform Khyber of their new plan, a twigs snap rings through the air. The air here has been dead silent since the party has arrived. Neither a rustle of leaves nor a call of a bird had been heard until now. The two look into the pitch black woods, their gaze returned by a toothy grin and a pair of blood red eyes staring back at them

so, how should the two handle this situation?

(and I'm glad you're enthusiastic!)

Our Hero draws his blade, the sound of the polished steal scraping against the scabbard fills the cold, dead air.

"Xiphos, I will be fine. I ask that you go inside and inform Khyber of our plan. Get her to help"

His tone wasn't demanding, but stern. He looks over to Xiphos to find a panicking mess. She was listening, but her body was so paralyzed with fear that she could not move. Our Hero gently taps her with the blunt edge of his blade, which seems to momentarily bring her out of her erratic state. He motions to the door and, as fast as he had seen anyone do so, runs for the door. Our Hero could faintly hear Xiphos explaining the plan to Khyber but she was so hysterical it could not be understood. Our Hero will just have to explain it to Khyber when he's done with this. Turning his blade back onto the succubus it has now slinked out of the woods fully. It's movements where staggered and sluggish but it moved with intent.

"Are you able to reason?"
Our Hero cries out

A throaty, guttural voice chokes out a response
"yes...can talk..."
it's voice was as staggered as it's walk, but it appears to be able to reason

"Then Answer! why are you here?"

"New home...much meat, yes much meat...more prey...family need more place to live...family grow very, very fast...."

"Family?"
This confuses Our Hero

"Other of us...many other of us, town had much food, town had much prey but prey has run..."
The beast steps closer to Our Hero
"Family ate what Family could, but much prey got away...some Family have no new look but you...you are good prey, your friend are good looks...not all bad for us..."

The implications of this response do not sit well with Our Hero, it appears that a band of succubi have expanded their hunting grounds and this town had the misfortune of being in those new hunting grounds. While most of the townsfolk have escaped some men where eaten and some women had their looks stolen. It appears that two women with perfect succubi disguises and a young man who'd make perfect reproduction material and foodhave just stumbled into the hunting grounds of an unknown number of hungry succubi

with this newfound realization, what should Our Hero do?
>1.) Do not respond and wait for Khyber's help

Though Our Hero doesn't have much time before this beasts springs into attack, he is shocked at how willing to converse it is. He risks getting more information by asking it about this 'family'

"many disguise here, many sibling find disguise but one....one still naked, cat, sheep and human. All will be proud of me when I bring you home. No longer jealous of them..."

Our Hero interprets "naked" as lacking a disguise, it appears succubi need to copy the form of an already living woman before they can start hunting. And given that the very woman whose form this one stole is still living, as said by the initial questgiver. It doesn't mean these women are dead either. But her remark about jealousy implies that not everyone could evacuate and it's siblings already took care of whoever was left behind. Our Hero wonders if that suggests this one is the runt of the litter. It bears it's claws, lunging at Our Hero. It appears this conversation is over but learning that there are 5 in total including this one is crucial information.

"YOU...MAKE GOOD FOOD, MAKE MANY SUCCUBI FROM YOU"
the beast gives a primal cry, it's voice inhuman and guttural. Our Hero was correct in assuming that this one was the runt, a small scrap starts between the two and Our Hero has little trouble blocking her frenzied slaps. He feigns defeat, backing up he cries

"Have mercy on me foul beast!"
His poor acting was enough to instill confidence in the monster, it lunges for him again just as Khyber exists the armory. Two things immediately come to Our Hero's attention, the spoils of the chest she plundered, and the killing intent in her eyes. It appears Xiphos's panic transferred to Khyber. She dashes between the succubus and Our Hero, protecting him with her body and aiming her newly found weapon at the monster. Xiphos is still too panicked to be casting any spells and Our Hero is desperately trying to explain the situation to Khyber. What should he do now?

While recouping inside may be the smart thing to do, it's unlikely any amount of explaining would take Khyber off her current path. So, he lets her take the shot, he drops to his knees, crouching beside her to protect her lower area should the monster lunge at her. Maybe her tail just has a mind of it's own, but it curls around Our Hero's head and rests on his shoulder, Our Hero assumes this is just an extent of her trying to protect him. Khyber pulls the trigger and a loud bang rings through the air. The metal ball tears through the succubi's arm, While she shows no psychical signs of pain, barely flinching at the lead ball flying through her arm, she's clearly miffed about being shot. She's weakened, as evidenced by her uneven movement. She lazily drops on all fours and slinks back into the woods, limping like a wounded dog. While the shot didn't kill her she did leave a trail of foul smelling blood to follow, and a killing blow wouldn't be hard to execute in it's wounded state. Just before Our Hero suggests following the trail, Khyber grabs him and demands to know if he's ok.

"Hey you aren't hurt, right? I mean that scrap you and the succubus had looked pretty intense."

"I am all right. You seem more worried about me than usual, did it really seem like I was in that much danger?"
Our Hero responds

"Yeah actually, didn't help that Xiphos came in talking all kinds of nonsense, I couldn't understand much of her panicked rambling but I guessed that, given her reaction you where already hamburger meat. She did say something about a bear trap though. What the hell was that about?"

"Ah, it is for a plan me and Xiphos formulated! We intend to use the brimstone as a lure, and when caught by the bear trap we will dispatch one of the succubi we catch"

Xiphos nods along, but a detail catches her attention
"One of them? the hell do you mean 'one of them' "

Our Hero explains the conversation he had with the succubus, that it's 'family' had four other members. three have taken the form of other beastwomen in this village while one doesn't have a disguise. Khyber looks annoyed

"That dog at the tavern didn't say a damn thing about this, we should charge him extra"

>Khyber obtained a hand cannon and three lead balls

>Our Hero obtained a bear trap

Our Hero tells Khyber that that's a discussion for later, as now there's a job they have to do. with the team recuperate and the plan explained, what should Our Hero do now?

>1.)Follow the blood trail and finish off the succubus
>2.)go to another part of the village and set up the trap
>3.)rest for now, wait for another succubi to come to the armory and save the brimstone and beartrap for another one
>4.)Write in

Khyber is 100% correct. If we all survive to that point, that guy should quintuple his pay with how there's 5 of these

HUNT HUNT HUNT!!!!!
Ask xiphos if she knows any spells that might be useful on the way, and watch out for an ambush. but other then that we need to go quickly to ensure it can't tell the others

>>1.)Follow the blood trail and finish off the succubus
Cute Khyber
>>6429508
>quintuple his pay
Based on the Succubu's description of the fifth it should be more of a 4 and one half. We can later use bad cop and good cop strategy to make the second offer more reasonable.

>2.)go to another part of the village and set up the trap
It's probably going towards it's family, too risky to follow
>>
>>6430170
My reasoning for picking following was that we couldn't risk the succubus warning the others about us
>>
>>6430170
It's injured and a poor strategic thinker
Killing it now would stop the others realising that we are here, so long as we can catch it quickly
