Welcome to QUEST ART GENERAL, a quest for showcasing the art of your quest and its characters! Players of all skill levels are welcome!

Quest mechanics:
1. Don't be a spamshit. Multiple posts are fine but keep it below Souv level.

Made this for a discord 'contest', but I figured why not let /qst/ try?

Basically, the current theme is to draw your QOC in a school or boy/girl scout uniform, and the one with the most replies to the picture gets crowned winner... and gets to choose the theme for the next Combat Zone.

This is Magda Pickett, she was raised in a Christian prepper-cult, and when the end of the world came, they adjusted poorly and have since become a dangerous band of fanatical marauders, with motivations and beliefs that are still mostly a mystery though the current 'episode' will be elucidating their whole deal pretty soon.

This was the first piece of art of one of my characters I've had posted by a player in one of my quests - which, btw, thank you so much Indonesian Gentleman, they said it was commissioned from you and I recognized the style! It's really fantastic!

At the moment, I am occupied with making other images not connected to the quest. They should be out of the way soon enough. Making them does help me refresh my mind a bit, so I can think about how to approach the drawings/scribbles on paper I made for the new images of the Vanguard quest.

I am also giving myself a roadmap, as I did in past quests; the method has kept me somewhat focused. The only problem is that I want to do far more than I ever did before; I have other quests in my mind, too. Perhaps a tad too ambitious.

The draw functions allow for quick, simple drawings to be made. See something like this simple animal, no colors, and easy. You can make something better if you have the time, but the draw function is always there if you want.

Try to have fun! Don't get too wrapped up in comparing yourself to others. If you make it work for yourself, you won't wanna draw/paint/model/whatever else. The only way to improve is to do what you're trying to get better at, and the only thing that'll get you to do that is to actually enjoy your hobby. Improvement should ultimately be a secondary priority— having a good time comes first.

Ran in dnd circles in middle and highschool with art people who drew all their characters and insisted I do the same, even if my skills were... lacking at the time. I felt angst about it for a while, but I'm exceedingly grateful in retrospect to have been surrounded by cool people who helped me pick up a cool hobby. For some people, this board has and will serve a similar function, which is always nice to see

Honestly? I'm pretty happy. I know there are many things I CAN improve in, especially when it comes to anatomy, perspective, and compelling line art, but I find myself relatively happy with where I am now and only really do studies as a fun challenge to see if I can. Ironically, I think this mindset has actually made me improve significantly faster than I did while I was actively working to get better and felt insecure about how my stuff looked.

Ultimately, my takeaway from drawing for the better part of a decade has been that art is a hobby, and your primary focus should be enjoyment and fulfillment, just like video games or reading or writing or any other hobby. Getting better is nice and all, but I'd rather have fun doodling stick figures than be miserable making a masterwork.

I wonder, if we can colaborate on a story that is brewing. We need pictures to show our characters' faces. Right, now, I have a pixie that appeared in the story. What the heck is a pixie? Pixie needs a face. For a weary walker in the Nevada dessert that juat survived not one but two happenings, a pixie needs to be something tangible: cast a shadow, and sometimes; the pixie dust has an unpleasant to curious odor.

I agree I like the white/albino look more, I just feel like my quests have too many "white" characters and I was kinda going inbetween of the troll and lizardman look. I still cannot draw this guy to any degree of quality or to my own satisfaction, but I appreciate the feedback.

I think it's cool, reminds me of an olm and other cave amphibians. If you wanted to get away from the white you could let the guy have a camouflage, like anoles maybe where he can alternate between two or three colors depending on temper and environment? Then he gets to keep the clean base look but he isn't really another 'white character'.

I think Hierophant is right in saying that having fun is the first priority, and trying new things is a part of that. If you find joy while making something, it not only means that what you're making is meaningful, but that you're in the optimal position to improve your craft. I also thank that being lazy with studies and practicing is actually good thing: what I mean is that the knowledge from studying references and doing research is best committed to memory when it is immediately connected to a project that you are interested in. I think then that the best approach to art is finding projects that you enjoy tackling, and which give you motivation to improve (which is something /qst/ is great for, as far as I can tell from my extremely limited experience).

Hard to say... wanting to get better at hard things has always been an instinct of mine, like playing piano, studying math, or playing Dark Souls. I enjoy the mental exercise, the honing of a craft, and seeing the revelation of an abstract idea brought into being.

Posting some shitty stick figure drawings I made of my quest's cast to reapply my trip. (I have no idea if this is going to post before or after my quest update but either way you get to see the "art.") They took like 20-30 minutes max and only exist to remind myself of character specifics when needed (I can see these guys 80-90% complete in my head just fine, but I always tend to forget one or two things).

I want to take up drawing again, but I just don't have the patience right now. Not with myself, not with what's required of me. I appreciate all of the tips in the OP; I'm saving them for later so I can hopefully use them when(/if) I get the time and will.

Just keep going, I guess. I'm hardly an artist at this point, but I've drawn at least a few things every year since I could hold a pencil. Inability to sit still and a horrifically wandering attention span. I drew for the sake of illustrating what I was thinking of when I was little, then found online spaces devoted to drawing and started drawing for their sake. If I had to be specific, I'd say it's a 60/40 split between the human figure and complex buildings. I've never been very good with humans, at all, but they're unavoidable and I want to learn how to do them justice. Complex buildings somewhat fascinate me, but I'm too impatient to draw most of them. I'm also not sure they exist within a 1000 mile radius of where I live, so it's hard to really capture their majesty with nothing but photo references lol.

I need a character that wears a hat. I have not decided on what my character looks like, but the still un-created character I have in mind--a main character of sorts-- is part of an international consipiracy, and he wears a hat. Fedora type, no trope pimp feather. He also dresses really well, in a nice high end suit with a hanlindigo blue shirt. Think polished teeth, buffed finger nails, 2k USD shoes and perfect hair. A front man of sorts. I dont know what system you are using to create, so lets start with the fedora hat.

Drawing humans is quite tricky, but, if you want some resources, I would recommend the drawing book by Michael Hampton, which I just remembered I put in the /qag/ pastebin in the OP a very long time ago. It was my first art book and quite easy to parse if you're a beginner, but it greatly helped with learning how to construct human form-- I promise you drawing people gets easier the more you do it!!!

If you prefer videos, Stan Prokopenko/Proko also has some really good videos as well. I might put that in the OP if we have another /qag/, which we probably will with so many new and enthusiastic drawfags :)

Also, asking fellow artfags for help is also good for if you need direction. There are a lot of nice anons here who will probably help you as you continue to practice.

I like that you wrote the scene so its not deterministic to the main flow. Great writing. I can "hear" Razzle and her take no shit attitude. A perfect combination to my Hector. Sandbox is not dead. I've been plotting out arcs, and tools, hooks and subplots. It should be interesting to see what happens next.

Eh Anya's one of those characters that's interesting to watch in a story because she drives conflict and has interesting opinions on things. But once you understand her schtick, she gets annoying real fast (if you didn't find her annoying from the get go.).

I think the Major had a throwaway line about girls like her becoming boring once the blackflower wears off.

KotH as King Of The Hill sounds like an American thing to me. In my mind, a more relevant word association, Koth is one of those Hyborian? lands from Conan swords and sorcery (the Robert E Howard short stories) and he probably borrowed it etymologically from Celtic / Brythonic, where "Koth" means "ancient" (a more modern variant of it is "couth", familiar, ie versus uncouth / strange) see pic related. well my preferred art is dioramas in my virtual tabletop, I like to hoard copy and paste (steal) photobash and re composite art concepts into virtual landscapes and things, does that count?

I spent ages making this diorama for UPYR, the aftermath of the beach roadside lamborghini chase scene. I actually spent quite some time finding a wrecked lamborghini from some photo journalism news article, (also it had to be an orange lamborghini for consistency) the exact angle, then cropping out the background lol and also adding in some fire / flame decals. I like artwork to be HD sort of AAA videogame looking, I don't possess any artistic talent lol so I just shamelessly steal other artwork from people who can make art lol no attribution lol but I just think all art is repurposed anyway and if you never ever ever commercialise or charge money for it (or pretend / claim it is your own) I think it should be allowed

well let me offer some honest criticism of your art Observer QM. I think it is very impressive, in fact out of all the art I have seen on this qtg forum I think yours is some of the most high effort and it certainly meets my criterion of near AAA videogame quality scifi spaceship / mech look etc. I really enjoyed the trailers you made in the past for it, I remember the one you did with the Armoured Core VI (??) theme music I thought the trailers were even better and more exciting and enticing than say commercial game trailers like Homeworld 3 etc.

However, despite browsing over your art I never really play or contribute in your games. The reason is (and I may be mistaken, in which case please correct me) I think your games don't really contain any MORAL PURPOSE. They look very cool and sci fi and videogame like but they are devoid of any thematic or moral / intellectual depth (I think most modern AAA Unreal Engine or Unity games are like this).

This is not really bad in of itself if you jist want entertainment, I don't mean to be harsh, but really if I want to play a mech or spaceship game, I can already just play Homeworld or Armoured Core with better graphics etc why play a slow asynchronous text forum game etc.

So really when I am looking at Art, I am seeking for something that cannot be found in a videogame (no matter the graphics quality) it is Art that conveys some moral or intellectual purpose beyond the superficial visuals (because a 3d game engine can always generate better visuals and art assets than the intangible imagination - but the game engine cannot by itself intrinsically generate humanistic experience and MORAL PURPOSE). And also I like this spaceship design of yours with the radiators, it is very cool and spacecraft realism looking. My last game, ROBONAUT: CISLUNAR SPACE, which was a hard sci-fi real world space craft / satellite institutional space agency simulator, was actually in some ways a direct counter-response to partly your ObserverQM visuals (and game formats and worldbuilding choices) but also many many space games and space opera settings I see on these image forum threads. SpaceX IPO is happening, Starlink goes "Beams On" in Iran (to use Elon Musk's phrase) and you are just doing like japanese mechs lol, come on grow up get real. Depict space like it actually is, and not like some 1980s cartoon which everyone has already seen and commercialised to death already.

This is not to invalidate or detract from what you like (anime robots and spaceships will always be there for you to entertain yourself with lol) but I just feel like you cannot make Art if you don't know anything or see anything from the real world

I think some double standards are at play here. For example I often see a lot of very banal, mindless 1 post id comments on the qtg, I just tolerate or scroll past them, sometimes they are funny or even unexpectedly interesting, or send me off to research serendipitous curiosities. For the videogame "car crash" scene above, I didn't predict the future lol but I knew (from having met some industry and tech executives in the past) some of them were into fast cars racing around beach roads mountains in Los Angeles etc, so I blended those ideas and influences into my game art.

I think I mentioned it before, but in my space setting for example, I used actual satellite photos, International Space Station telemetry imagery and spacecraft rendezvous proximity operation / close inspection graphics from academic papers etc (I slightly edited some of the visuals for sharpness / contrast) and incorporated them into my game Art.

In the Mars exploration scenes I even went so far as to get imagery of the exact specific crater location the players chose from Nasa, for the water ice hunting / rover scenes etc. The weird "alien nodule" coral thing was a real geological curiosity identified from some past Nasa rover mission (which I thought was strangely underreported and cool / lifelike-looking) so I included it

I feel you need to justify this assertion. You asked me to post my Art, and I obliged. I don't think your dioramas count for art as implied by OP. This thread is about drawn or modelled (in the case of Observer) work made by users, not dioramas of images you took from the internet and put together on a board which is another image from the internet (none of the images created by you). There's something to be said for e.g. an arrangement of figurines or other objects to be defined as quest art, but not just random pics on blank pedestals.

Well you have given a very polite response, kind anon, so I will spare you my monologue lol on how I used to sponsor a literary arts journal, how mixed media collage is art or I suppose you could call it bricolage lol or other pretentious art world nomenclature - in fact this was actually a theme in my UPYR game setting above, one of the items the players start with is a Heap Of Crap / random rubbish junk they found on the beach seashore lol I wanted to see if they might try and satirically roleplay some imaginative uses for it (eg pretend the item was some expensive avant garde modern art sculpture, to gain access into various facilities / game map sections eg a secluded luxury beach house). Ok, I will try to keep it concise and not delve into the artistic reasoning.

The cop out answer: there isn't any lore that says they can't. You are not going to find any sweeping statement that says "all eldar are pale skinned". This ties into the concept of "there is no wrong way to paint a miniature" that trickles into the canon lore. In fact, in the lore itself it is mentioned that eldar have the tech to change their appearance in any way they want. An example is a comb that a character runs through their hair which instantly changes their hair colour into whatever they want.

Hopefully more satisfying answer: dark eldar get their energy from the psychic emotions that are released from the suffering of others. They are in a way emotion vampires. Dark eldar that don't go around torturing or haven't done so recently because they are poor or weak or whatever are described to look gaunt and goulish. However a dark eldar that is rich and can get a hold of lots of suffering look younger / beautiful / vibrant. If you look up the lady Aurelia Malys model you can see GW give her a skin tone with more warm pigments.

Games workshop own inability to have a standardized vision of eldar: eldar have been around for like 40 years at this point. You can Google an eldar and get an image of a tall grey alien with a mohawk next to an image of a human with pointy years yet both will be official canon at some point or another. However what has been canon from start to finish is that eldar and dark elder ARE the same race. Anything an eldar can be, a dark eldar can be too and there are many examples of eldar with fairer completions.

I had them in some sort of dating cyoa setup with varying degrees of mental illness involved but the engagement part was far outstripped by the lore so I was unsatisfied with that. It helps the individuality when the uniform is worn to certain personal preference like with length, folding or what goes under, or has certain imperfections in fitting. It does require having the uniform itself in a whole state first though, an extra step.
Most of these had uniforms beforehand to work from for example. Years of iteration on different things. For the ones that look like uniforms and/or gear that is, obviously the leopard print isn't an example of that.

A dizzy Hector stood in the middle of the Nevada sand junkyard. Above him, a dusty sign dangled from the door handle of a Tuff Shed TR-800, its grey and cerulean blue siding faded from the sun. The structure looked parched, washed only by the intermittent, occasional drips of the desert. Once in a while, these sheds were drenched by monsoon rains across the Golden State, but out here, the grime stayed baked in. The sign on the door, hanging fast by a sailor's clove hitch, read: "Lots of Parts." The play on words did not escape him.

He looked down at his screen. It showed a website—a strange place called 4chan. Who or what was this 4chan? Confused, Hector stared inside the imageboard's three-dimensional world, peering at it through the flat, one-dimensional screen of a clumsy Nokia. It was an ancient interface with rudimentary buttons, good for those times when Hector needed something rugged with the flexibility of primitive web access. It was the Timex watch of cellphones, but right now, it was acting like a gateway of sorts.

It was all too much for Hector, the wandering wanderer hired to find out what was going on in Vegas. He couldn't grasp why he was standing in front of a collectible car—a vintage lookalike of the General Lee—why his phone was acting like a portal, or why there was a pixie floating directly in front of him. One thing was certain: Hector needed this pixie creature to cover its pelvic region. The newspaper sheets detailing the local dubs event, fashioned into a temporary loincloth, would have to work as a modesty cover until the pixie disappeared or decided to spin up something tasteful. Maybe this pixie could get to pixie stuff and sew something clean out of the newsprint.

He glared back at the mobile screen. Its clunky interface was made clunkier by the phone's stiff rubber buttons. This 4chan place felt like an ancient relic from a time when the internet was new, exciting, and experimental. Suddenly, the low battery icon flashed, and the screen went completely blank.

Hector returned to the real.

While I have never had a character interact with an active character driven by another writer—especially an artist with visual skills—this is going to be incredibly fun. I'm working on inserting my barely disguised fetish into an abandoned quest I hijacked. To do that according to my exact tastes I need art.

To make the art I am cheating with a 3D mannequin because I can't be fucked to practice anatomy till I can seamlessly draw the difference between stylized, idealized and realistic body types.
