Your friends and family slowly stopped associating with you. Something about a social media bubble you were supposedly in, which caused you (once an almost-respectable and mild-mannered young man) to become a jaded and paranoid college drop out who constantly talked about increasingly fringe and controversial obsessions (the WEF, Soros, et al.). You also became obsessed with an imminent end-of-the-world event. You weren't sure when or how it was all going to crumble. But you knew it would happen sooner rather than later.

You got a miserable job at Amazon and worked as much overtime as you could and bought some land a few miles off a state highway in Kentucky. Over a few months, you spent every extra dollar buying supplies and stocking them up at your land.

You thought you had at least a year or two before you'd need to move up there permanently. But, as it turns out, the "happening" came far sooner than even you expected. You're still not really even sure what's going on. But the power's flickering in and out, buildings are blowing up, and people are panicking. You barely made it out of town, and the journey up the interstate wasn't easy. But you finally made it.

It's mid-March. So weather won't be a problem. Yet.

You had shared your plans with a handful of other people, mostly people online. It looks like some of them actually made it.

Don't want any younger men to have to compete with, & both old timers have solid practical experience. Both women as well. A lawyer & an influencer are of no use to us.

(One addition to list in prior post- You also have four vehicles-
>A Tesla Model Y with 22% battery remaining (Kelly's)
>A Toyota Corolla with 1/4 tank of gas (yours)
>A Ford F-150 on Empty (Butch's)
>A Honda Civic with 1/2 a tank of gas
>No fuel reserves).

It's about 1 p.m., there are seven or so hours of daylight left. You have some big decisions to make.

How to approach relationship with companions:
>Authoritative- Emphasize that this is your land and you are in charge. If they don't like that, they can go find somewhere else.
>Communal- De-emphasize any notion of authority, try to frame everyone as equals.
>Pragmatic- Welcome their input, but at the end of the day someone has to be in charge, and that's gonna be you.
>Democratic- Suggest that you should vote for a leader now, and again every month.
>Write in.

What tasks should everyone prioritize for now?

You:
>Build something (specify)
>Help someone else (specify)
>Start clearing trees and gathering wood
>Look for food sources
>Make sure no one else is on your land.

lmao you're alright quartermaster. Hopefully you can make her real.

>Pragmatic- Welcome their input, but at the end of the day someone has to be in charge, and that's gonna be you.
Authoritative would be better if we could back it up, but we're a college dropout with no real skills. The fact we had the foresight to prepare, plan all of this, and gather everyone together should carry us through, and so long as we can get some good decisions in, with no major fuckups, and/or take care of difficult problems, that should cement our status as leader for a good long time. Plus it's our land.

You:
>Build something (specify)
>Help someone else (specify)
>Start clearing trees and gathering wood
This would be with Eric and the fence. We'll clear the trees and use the wood to help Eric build the fence.

Kelly:
>Food prep.
Obvi.

Eric:
>Build something (specify)
A fence.
A perimeter is the best option against the fey, zombies, humans, and whatever monstrosities are out there in the woods.

Butch:
>Make sure no one else is on your land
Doesn't make sense to have a fence with other people on it. Plus, there's no one to sneak up on us while we're building the thing.

Eric:

Kelly:
>Food prep.
Best to get meals for the foreseeable future sorted out while we can. It will be easier to forage for food on a stable food supply.

Butch:
>Make sure no one else is on your land
He's the one with the gun.

I have some questions.
- Which way does the river flow? This is important as we don't want to take shits nor wash laundry upstream.

- Should we expect any friends or relatives of our companions to arrive?

- What time of the year is it?

You sent out online invites to everyone mentioned in my first post. It's possible some of them will show up later. As to your family, you didn't invite them. Doesn't mean they won't somehow find out and show up. But you don't know.

Thanks for the info, QM!

>North to South
Looks like we'll be doing our cleaning, bathing, and shitting at the South end of the river.

>You sent out online invites to everyone mentioned in my first post. It's possible some of them will show up later.
We should give Butch the heads-up then, and have everyone in our group list people they are familiar with so we don't shoot the wrong people.

>Mid-March.
We have to prioritize building shelter while the temperature is still manageable. Again, I think we should have Eric level the ground and set the foundation for our shelter. The next thing we should do is secure the North end of the river as our supply of water. Once we have water and shelter secured, we can get to sourcing food from the area. We should also make sure that each of us has layered clothing for cold swings and removes layers when the weather is hot.

Would I be correct to assume that we're somewhere in central or eastern Kentucky?

Yes, you're in Eastern KY (Appalachia). Steep, rugged, rocky country. Lots of game to hunt and easy to stay hidden. But the low ground and hollow bottoms flood, the heavy timber slows any large-scale building; and the soil will take real work before it'll take most crops.

They rolled in one at a time throughout the morning. First Butch, a mountain of a man. Tall and fairly vigorous despite his age. As it turns out, he doesn't live too far away. The two of you didn't talk much besides introductions. Next, Kelly, attractive and bubbly, who tried to strike up a conversation with the stoic Butch and the socially-awkward (you) and wound up twiddling her thumbs, perhaps wondering she'd made some big mistake coming out here. Finally, Eric arrived, giving Kelly no cause for comfort. The man might be in the dictionary under "Egghead." You notice from the get-go that he has some trouble keeping his eyes off of Kelly. Not that you can blame him too much. She's certainly easier on the eyes than the rest of your crew (yourself included). Nonetheless, something to keep an eye on.

The four of you waited around for a while until, finally, mid-day arrives. No use sitting around any longer. You draw a deep breath, causing the rest of them to look at you, and say, "Hey everyone, I'm [(you)]. I'm glad you all could make it. I was pretty selective with who I told about this place. I picked you three because you each have skills that I thought would be valuable in this situation.

"Now, none of us know each other. And we're all probably going to have different ideas about how to handle different situations. We should all try to respect other people's areas of expertise... You pause, you need to stick this landing. "But this is my land. If disagreements arise... My word is final." You want to wince. Asserting yourself like this isn't your usual M.O. But you stay composed and are pleased to see that the others don't react negatively at all.

Kelly nods along, as if everything you're saying sounds reasonable to her. Butch gives a grunt in response that sounds vaguely affirming. And Eric eyes flicker side-to-side for a moment, as if registering the meaning, before he gives a single, accepting nod.

You suppress a sigh of relief. "With that settled, we should get down to business. Butch, I'd like you to patrol the area, and keep an eye out for any late arrivals." You rummage through your bag and grab a pen and notebook. You write down the names of the others you gave the address to, tear out the page, and hand it to him. "If their name isn't on the list. You can assume they're uninvited. If they strike you as harmless, you can bring them here and we can figure out what to do with them. Otherwise, well..." You swallow, struggle to say the next part.

"Fill their ass with lead?" He asks with a wry smile.

You relax a bit, "Yeah. Pretty much."

"Sure. But I need a pistol too. Not using this beauty unless I have to."

"You got it."

You get Butch his pistol, and he ambles off to go secure the area.

Next you turn to Kelly. You struggle a bit to maintain eye contact with the attractive girl. "I need you to be in charge food today. If you have time to look around for food sources, great. But the focus should be on having nutritious, filling meals ready for everyone. And, respectfully, well…”

She nods, “I get it. I’m the only girl.” She shrugs. “I figured I’d be on kitchen duty. Better that than having to shoot anyone.” She says, trying to lighten the mood a bit.

You nod. This is going well so far. She never struck you as an overly feminist type online, but you can never be sure. “Great. Thanks.”

Finally, you turn to Eric. “Eric, I think our first order of business should be a fence. We need to establish a perimeter. And a fence can help keep out bears, other animals, people, and…” You swallow, “Well. Anything else that’s out there.”

Eric gives you a skeptical look. “Um. Not to uh.. question your authority or anything but… a fence in an area like this is a pretty big project. We definitely won’t get it done today. Honestly, probably not even this week. Are you sure you don’t want to build a dwelling first or something?” He stammers out awkwardly, avoiding eye contact.

You think it over for a second. “It’s a fair point. But we have tents. So, I think we need to try to focus on our security for now.

He nods, “Alright then.”

You hand him the pen and notebook. “If you can plan it out, I’ll help however I can with building it.”

“Alright then.” He repeats, taking the materials and walking off.

You go ahead and put up the tents, getting a fire going for Kelly, and spend some time unloading some other supplies until, at last, Eric returns.

“Alright, I’m ready.”

The two of you go off as Eric explains his plan. Once he explains it, it seems obvious, but you’re not sure you’d have ever thought of it yourself. Rather than waste lumber and labor planting fence posts, you’ll use some of the thicker trees surrounding the main campsite as fence posts. Apparently, there’s a pretty simple method to do so without killing the tree. He explains that without having to deal with the fence posts, you can probably get the fence up in about 2 weeks of dedicated work. It won’t last forever, depending on the wood and the weather, it may struggle to last more than a year or so. But it will give you some semi-secure space to rest and keep your things.

The two of you spend the rest of the day marking the trees that will serve as the fence posts and start gathering large branches and logs that you can incorporate into the fence, leaving them next to the post-trees.

When the sun finally starts to set, you all reconvene at the campfire. And it actually smells… pretty good?

“No body brought any plates or utensils so… I guess we’re eating with our hands.” Kelly says, sounding disappointed. “I cooked up some veggies and canned chicken. I hope it doesn’t taste too bad.”

The four of you sit around and give your reports for the day. You start, “Eric and I are working on the fence. We can probably get it done in a week or so. Hopefully after that, we can feel a little more secure when we’re in our campsite.”

Kelly looks relieved. “I looked around for anything to edible. Sadly, there isn’t much this time of year. I found some oyster mushrooms, but not a ton. And some edible greens that we probably really don’t want to eat unless we’re really starving. I had some extra time before dinner, so I started looking through some of the seeds you all brought. There are some we could probably go ahead and plant. Some of the others we won’t want to plant for another month or so, we still might get some cold weather.”

There are a few seconds of silence before Butch speaks up. “I guess that leaves me. Nothing happened. No signs of anyone but us.” That’s all he says.

There isn’t much chit chat over dinner. You can tell it’s bothering Kelly a bit, but no one else seems to mind.

Votes will cover the next week or two unless an event arises:

How to handle sleeping arrangements. You have two tents that fit four people each.
>Suggest that the men share a tent, give Kelly her own space.
>Give Butch and Eric a tent, try to shack up with Kelly
>Share a tent with Eric, put Butch with Kelly.
>Share a tent with Butch, put Kelly with Eric.
>Tell them that, as leader, you get your own tent.

Kelly’s tasks (in addition to daily food prep):
>Start a garden
>Daily foraging
>Get the water purification system going
>Write in

Butch:
>Focus entirely on security of the camp until the fence is done
>Help out with the fence

Excellent character portraits and character descriptions. I'm surprised Kelly is so upbeat, but Butch and Eric are like I'd imagined them to be.

But honestly, using the trees as fence posts is pretty brilliant. Let Eric know that too. Thank Kelly for the food. Thank Butch for patrolling.

>Suggest that the men share a tent, give Kelly her own space.
Kelly might go along with sharing a tent with anyone of else, but Eric already has eyes on her and would get offended if we try to pair up with her ourselves or put her with Butch trying to imply something.

Best play to everyone's strengths.

Like Kelly said, early spring isn't the best time for foraging. Summer~Autumn is peak picking time. She doesn't seem capable of setting up the water purification system either, at least not by herself.
Kelly’s tasks (in addition to daily food prep):
>Start a garden
Majority of her day should be gardening. It's gonna be tough by herself, but everyone should be able to help once we get the basic logistics set up.
>Fermentation
No idea how this would work.
>Organize camp.
When she has time.
So beginning of her day should be getting 2 hours: breakfast going for everyone and lunch/snacks we can carry while we're out, then 1 hour: work on organizing the camp, followed by 1 hour: fermentation for a bit, 3 hours: gardening, and 2 hours: finally getting dinner going; with more hours spread out evenly or as much time as needed for each task. That's only 9 hours I laid out.

Butch:
>Help out with the fence
>Hunt
>Write in
Butch should first become familiar with the land, finding any weak spots, ambush sites, choke points, hiding holes, animal gathering spots, etc. then set up a schedule to effectively patrol the area in the morning, hunt a quarter of his day, help with the fence for a quarter of the day(including advice on how to make it better), and then finish with an evening patrol.

Eric:
>Spend some time planning other structures for the camp (specify)
>Spend some time working the radio
>Write in
Eric is definitely a thinker and needs to use his mind; a honey-do list will keep him occupied with goal-oriented tasks to complete, have purpose, and self-worth. Challenging enough to stroke his ego, but still realistic enough that we can manage to create it. 1. A house we can live with: 4~8 rooms in case anyone comes or to have extra space, a bathroom with bath/shower and toilet(outhouse if need be), a fireplace, basement, and kitchen. 2. A food storage building. 3. A garage for the cars. 4. A relay station for the radio. 5. A workshop for the guns 6. Medical tent 7. Watch towers 8. A barn for animals. 9. Any buildings anyone else might come up with.

Crap, hold up. Include in the evening time for Eric to setup the purification system with this as a top priority.

Once we get the fence up, we help Kelly in the morning, Butch in the afternoon, then Eric in the evening. Butch should absorb fence time into hunting time and change it up if/once we have too much food into help with building.

We should also set-up a night patrol, but there's not enough people/too much to do for now. Maybe a crude alarm system with bells and strings or something similar could suffice.

It would be wise to ensure Eric isn't around Kelly long enough to get any dumb ideas. We should help Eric or Kelly with their tasks going forward to make sure of that.

Kelly:
>Get the water purification system going
Water is THE priority right now. We have enough food to last us for a month, but we can't last more than three days without purified water.

Butch:
>Help out with the fence
Chaos in the towns and cities should keep intruders occupied for at least two or three more months. Once the fence is finished, it will be easier for Butch to do his job.

Eric:
>Focus entirely on the fence
You:
>Focus entirely on the fence.
With all these hands on deck, the fence should be complete in the next week or two.

>>6438545
This doesn't sound like a bad idea, but hunting should come after the fence and water. Remember that shelter and water are the first two priorities.

Sleep
>Give Butch and Eric a tent, try to shack up with Kelly

Kelly should definitely not be left alone at night, or Eric will make his move on her. I'm pretty sure he's going to attack her at some point. Trying to "appease" him will NOT work and will only result in Kelly getting attacked. A horny man is never appeased. There's only one woman and it should be clear she's the leader's woman from the beginning.

Kelly
>Get the water purification system going
This is the highest priority as anon said.

Butch
>Help out with the fence

Eric
>Spend some time working on the radio

We probably don't need him much anymore for the fence. He needs to complete as many complex tasks as possible before we kill him and use him as meat supply (if we don't kill him, he's going to attack Kelly soon).

You
>Focus entirely on the fence
>>
>>6438510
>Suggest that the men share a tent, give Kelly her own space.
Kelly
>Get the water purification system going
Butch
>Help out with the fence
Eric
>Spend some time working the radio
You
>Find some time to help out Kelly.

My plan is a bit slow, but it’s necessary. Kelly needs socialization and mc needs a backbone.

What's going on with you guys? I'm not trying to get the MC to hook up with Kelly, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna cockblock Eric either. And who cares that Eric has eyes for Kelly? He's a grown ass man and she's a grown ass woman. You guys are acting like he's planning the perfect moment to rape her or something. If he can get some in in this post apocalyptic nightmare by talking with her, more power to him. It's pretty fucking ridiculous, especially shit like this

Kelly seems relieved when you suggest that she gets her own tent. No one else really reacts. After all, how could they without immediately outing themselves as a creep?

The next two weeks go pretty smoothly for the most part, but somehow they feel like an eternity. You've spent the better part of the last few years like a lab rat: half your day facilitating the delivery of packages with unknown origins to their unknown destinations, and the other half hunched in front of your computer screen either reading some grim report of the state of the world or preparing for this very moment. To be outside having real stakes in your life and to witnessing the fruits of your labor overwhelms your mind like god put the sun itself in some dusty decrepit cellar. Each moment feels so rich. And your once constant and intrusive thoughts sound alien and abhorrent. Is that really who (you) were? Who are (you) now?

--

The three men dedicate a substantial amount of time to building the fence, and your efforts are rewarded. After two weeks the thing is practically done. It's not pretty by any means. A mess of the sturdiest logs and branches you can reasonably find, stabilized by ancient Appalachian trees. It's only enough to cover the main campsite and your supplies, but it'll provide some security from the unknown elements out in the woods.

You, Eric, and Butch find time for other tasks besides the grueling work of building the fence.

Butch goes on occasional patrols, and he fortunately reports that nothing of note has occurred on his patrols. Yesterday, he actually took the.22 instead of his rifle (which he has reiterated none of you are to touch), occasionally firing off to [I forgot to roll for hunt, so take a freebie.] He actually brought back a couple squirrels, prolonging your supply of non-perishables.

Kelly still has a ways to go with learning to cook squirrel. Nonetheless, she at least makes it edible, and alongside some of the small foraged salads and minimal intrusion into your stockpile, you're able to all eat three square meals a day.

She's also successful in getting the water purifier going. Unfortunately, one piece wasn't secured properly, causing it to break after about a week and a half. It's probably fixable, but Eric will need to do it. [24, minor misfortune]

During your breaks from fence-building, you help her with some of her tasks. Mostly with getting the garden ready. You help with collecting enough soil to make a couple of twig-surrounded raised beds, into which Kelly sows the more cold-resistant crops like kale, cabbage, and potatoes.

You also help her organize the campsite a bit. Putting the mess of items pulled from everyone's cars into sensible places within the fences perimeter, and moving the cars themselves into the area between the campsite and the river.

(forgot my trip)

[Scene]
"Soo... umm.. How are things so far?" You ask Kelly as you haul a bag of rice over from the haphazard pile of provisions everyone unloaded and into the designated food corner.

She can no doubt sense your extreme social awkwardness, but despite that, she perks up at the opportunity for some conversation. "All things considered, could be a lot worse!" She declares, squatting down and throwing some greens into a pan to steam. "What about you?" She seems desperate to keep the conversation alive.

You shrug. "Is it weird that I feel kind of happy?"

She tilts her head thoughtfully, "A little but... I kind of know what you mean. No bills, no stress from work or parents. Just life. At least for now, it feels like a weight has lifted."

You're a little surprised she's so understanding. "Y-yeah! Exactly." Your thoughts race as you think of what to say next. "Y-you know, you're not really what I expected." You say, feeling immediately like you just put your foot in your mouth.

She stands up and raises an eyebrow at you. "What does that mean? When you heard my last name was Liu were you expecting some delicate cherry blossom, quiet and focused? Demure and submissive?" She says with a shit-eating grin.

Kinda, yeah, honestly, but you don't want to say that for obvious reasons. "N-no, not at- I just- well." You stammer.

"Chill, it's ok. I came here when I was pretty young. My dad does oriental medicine in California. I've always been kind of a free spirit I guess. So, I've never really fit into people's expectations of me." She shrugs. "Sorry if you're disappointed."

You hope you didn't piss her off to bad. You hole up a bit, focusing on your tasks.

After a few seconds she breaks the silence. "So, where did you grow up?"

You feel a little relieved.

[Scene end]

Eric oversees the fence construction along with providing some manual labor. He also finds some time to work the radio, listening for anything. All is silent for a while. But after about a week he starts finding some signals. Mostly people soliciting a place to go.

He also uses a notebook to start sketching out some other plans for the campsite. Dwellings, a proper cooking area, a smokehouse, and other buildings you'll no doubt need eventually.

All in all, things are going well. Will everything always be this easy?

>Fence complete!
>Food: ~60 person-days (~15 days for four) · garden 3–6 weeks out · hunting begun (2 squirrels) · river still untapped
>Water: reserve ~110 person-days frozen · purifier down, routine Eric fix
>Hygiene: ~2 weeks — wall hits next block
>Ammo: .22LR ~2,495
>Infrastructure: fence ~done (campsite only) · beds sown · camp organized · plan bank (dwelling, cook area, smokehouse) ·
>radio: voices heard, no outbound comms.

Kelly's pretty cool. Looks good. I would add to Butch's Daily Tasks to start clearing trees for wood and get to know him. Unless clearing trees is part of a larger project, then have him fish instead. But I would like it if he taught everyone to shoot the guns. That sounds good.
Trees if he can do it
Fish if he can't
Guns once he set up some netting or checked the river for any good fish.
This is also a reminder as not to forgot down the road.

For larger projects
>Start building another structure [Specify structure and workers]

Kelly:
>Organize camp
Formalizing how things work at the camp will make things easier in the long run.

Butch:
>Patrol
We can focus on hunting/foraging once the water is sorted out.

Eric:
>Fix water purifier
I can't stress enough how much we need to guarantee our water supply before we commit to any other plans.

Get to know:
>Eric
Might as well, given that we would be helping him out with the water purifier. It will also help see if we need to worry about keeping an eye on him and Kelly or not. Obviously, we wouldn't bring that topic up; we'll just get a gauge on his character.

Any larger projects/ expeditions/ events:
>Start building another structure [Specify structure and workers]
Let Eric plan and build the structure, us and Butch assist him with building it, and Kelly handle the lighter monotonous tasks. We can start after the water purifier is fixed.
>>
>>6439462
>Food consumption: one meal per day

We need to cut out the food consumption immediately. We are going to starve very soon if we keep going like this. We need to gain more time until we find a reliable food source, which will not be easy.

Two weeks pass, and now you're in a routine. You feel stronger

>Purifier (82)
Eric is able to fix the purifier without much trouble.

>Radio (65)
Eric spends an hour or two each day listening to the radio. He keeps a notebook and starts jotting down recurring patterns. No major breakthroughs. But he's beginning to get a sense of the survivalist economy: People advertising and soliciting goods, looking for refuge, warning about scammers and other dangerous elements.

>Cabin (crit success)
Eric operates like a sort of savant when it comes to putting the cabin together. He uses some of the lumber you brought and, with Butch and your help, you do over a months worth of work in just two weeks. By the end, you have a weatherproof, single room dwelling complete with a floor, a door, and a window with a shutter.

>Hunt (68)
Butch uses about 65 rounds of .22 and brings in a steady stream of small game.

>Teach shooting (50)
Butch spends some time teaching you all how to shoot. No one really gets the hang of it yet, but you all get over the initial jitters of holding and shooting a firearm.

>Forage (47)
Kelly brings back a modest amount of vegetables and mushrooms.

>Food prep (66)
Kelly continues to cook solid, efficient meals.

>Hang out with Kelly (90)
You spend some more time hanging around the camp getting to know Kelly. You're starting to learn her sense of humor. You banter with each other and, sometimes, it even feels like you're flirting. By the end of the two weeks, it seems like her face brightens up a bit whenever she sees you coming.

(Milestone- Charisma. You now roll Bo2 for charisma due to your experience with Kelly).

>Event (76- Mild Fortune)
While foraging, Kelly locates a yarrow patch not far from the campsite. Yarrow has several medicinal properties. She makes a habit of starting to harvest it while out foraging.
