>>6451677Definitely lot's of fantastical elements. Mercurial Gods, monsters, demons, Fae, spirits, Mad Sorcerer, Decaying Magical Empires, etc. Tone itself is inspired by Berserk, Conan, Elric of Melnibone, The Broken Sword, Bran Mak Morn, Thorgal. Traitor Son Cycle, Warhammer Fantasy, I recommend them all as good reads. >>6451681Ranging from Early Medieval to Early Renaissance, depending on location and society. >>6451682Maybe? I don't know so I guess the MC doesn't know yet. >>6451686See above for some of my primary inspirations. Berserk is in there. There is a region similar to the Canton from Sworn to Valour, but definitely more darker in tone, think dark woods and false knights. >>6451636You were born in a jeweled tower, where all the heirs of the empire had been born for all memory. In a chamber sheathed in amethyst and gold. It was the greatest symbol of the Porphyrian empire, which foreigners in their various tongues called simply the Purple Empire. Once Sorcerer-Emperors had sat the throne and ruled half the known world. But that was long ago, and the empire that remained was a parody of its old self. Shrunken in everything but its ceremony, deluded like the very old lingering on their once great youth.Your father was a usurper. A peasant's son who had risen through the ranks on talent. First a soldier, then a general, and then, on a single red morning when he opened his master's throat and lifted the diadem from the dead man, an Emperor. The old emperor's blood did not lie quiet. His kin gathered in the provinces, and from among them they raised up the most charismatic and the most battle-proven: Andronikas Xeros, who governed the eastern themes and was loved there. From his provinces he raised an army. But the sinews of war demand much, and the imperial treasury sat behind the walls of the capital in your father's hands. So Andronikas made a bargain. The armed retinues of Ordolan were forever passing eastward in those years. Knights on pilgrimage and crusade in the name of their Virgin Goddess, men of war, men with holy debts–crusading was always ruinously expensive. And it happened that a great host was upon the road, the greatest in living memory, and its captain was Prince Robert of Ordolan, called the Red. To him Andronikas offered a sum so ludicrous that it could only be believed because it came from a noble of the Purple Empire. Robert the Red weighed his options and decided the offered gold would serve both his interests and his goddess’ and accepted. They came to Chrysera, the golden city and understood it could only be taken by storm—once and twice, three times, four times—until on the fifth assault a gate was breached.Andronikas had negotiated for the preservation of his city. It was to be his, whole and unharmed, but he died in the final assault within sight of the breach, and with him died the bargain. The people of Chrysera were proud, they fought the Ordolanes in the streets, preferring death to conquest. Your father, viewing from the palace as his city was overrun, summoned his court warlocks and commanded them to summon a demon of Wrath. All knew it would demand blood as its payment>The Warlocks, fearing the dangers, decide the Emperor is mad and refuse the order. Enraged, the Emperor orders them massacred, the crusaders reach the Palace to find it in chaos. >Reservations are set aside and a summoning circle is drawn, Gorgo the Wrathful is summoned and imbues all the citizens of Chrysera with a portion of his wrath and power, impossible to survive but each man made temporarily unstoppable.

They prefer death to conquest after all.

>>6451903>Reservations are set aside and a summoning circle is drawn, Gorgo the Wrathful is summoned and imbues all the citizens of Chrysera with a portion of his wrath and power, impossible to survive but each man made temporarily unstoppable. And so the long twilight of our age begins.Do we weaponise warlocks in the future or distrust them?
>>6451903>Reservations are set aside and a summoning circle is drawn, Gorgo the Wrathful is summoned and imbues all the citizens of Chrysera with a portion of his wrath and power, impossible to survive but each man made temporarily unstoppable. The Empire will not yield to these invaders. Let it all burn, give these invaders a brutal execution as the city they sought to conquer burns around them.>>6451921Maybe we hold some suspicion towards them after this, but personally I feel we would likely have our hatred focused on Ordolan and their knights who came here to burn our city to the ground at the behest of the traitor Andronikas.
>>6451924excellent point, Crusaders get sent to the many hells and traitors and usurpers suffer the earthly delight of sadistic sacrifice to our many demons

>>6451903The warlocks stood in their dark robes and looked at one another in silent conversation, weighing oaths, fear, and ambition. Until wordlessly, they bowed in acquiescence. The summoning was to be performed in a vast dungeon chamber below the palace. A bound nameless prisoner was slain and a circle was drawn with the blood of that unfortunate man. Within the circle they inscribed the infernal constellation, a map of hell so that the demon might find its way and back. At the center they fixed a focus point through which it would be drawn out of the darkness and contained. From among all the demons the empire had consorted with, Gorgo the Wrathful had been chosen. They began to chant his true name; the chant began as a crowd of voices, some lagging a half breath, others rushing, until slowly the many voices closed upon each other to become one voice. The warlocks stood utterly still, If the circle broke and one foot shifted and brushed a line of drying blood then nothing would contain what was coming, and every soul in that chamber, and in the palace above it, and perhaps in the burning city above would be doomed.Demons rarely take corporeal form in the world. Their presence alone is enough for all but the maddest summoner's purposes, and so Gorgo came as a smoky haze — the burning residue of something long rotted, thick and foul, filling the chamber to its corners. Out of the smog peered two eyes, red and gleaming, and there was nothing in them but hate. It was Gorgo's nature to hate, as it is wolf's nature to hunt; and had he not been bound, he would gladly have feasted on the souls of every man present and gone rampaging up through the palace like wild fire. The warlocks stood like statues at their places, red-faced, sweating, utterly still. The emperor was brought in. He wore the full regalia of his office. Gorgo's infinite memory recognized the diadem of the Purple Empire at once. "Ah," said the voice out of the smoke. "Another one. So soon after the last?" The last summoning of Gorgo had taken place more than three centuries prior. But for the demon it seemed scarce a week ago. "And how your people have diminished," Gorgo said, "that their emperor is no longer capable of standing within the circle and facing me himself. Speak, man. Ask me what you want, and pay your dues."The emperor asked for the demon's power. That his wrath might smite his enemies sacking his city.Gorgo laughed, genuinely amused. His price would be the souls of the Ordolanes, to feast upon. It would be a trifling thing to drive every invader from the city. But the people of the empire would sacrifice too. Each of them would be touched with demonic power, and each of them forever changed — those, that is, who survived it. For many would die in the throes of their wrathful trance, but Goro did not see fit to share that knowledge.->->
>>6452388Above, in the burning city, the eyes of the citizenry began to glow: red, gleaming, hot as lava. A man was run through with a spear but did not succumb to his wounds. He felt no pain, only anger, even as his blood leaked from his body. Inhuman strength flooded into the men and women of Chrysera, they needed no weapons, they tore the crusaders apart with their bare hands: a punch enough to dent steel, a yank strong to pull a head from its neck or an arm from its socket. The streets were painted red, but the blood was no longer the citizenry's. The hunters had become the hunted. Like a flood the Ordolanes ran for the gate through which they had come swarming in, and of the army that had entered the city, three men in every four now lay dead. By some miracle the Prince of Ordolan had survived. With the sun beginning to set and his men in a fearful fit, he abandoned his camp and his provisions and contented himself with his own life and the lives of the men who still had theirs. They were gone from the city. And then those citizens who had felt neither fear nor pain finally succumbed to their wounds. And there were those who could not withstand the touch of hell, and went mad, ultimately killing themselves. As for those who survived, they were forever changed: a dark shroud upon the heart, and a wrathful whisper in the ear.A whisper that spoke of who was responsible. The usurper emperor, who had subjected them to this madness. And the hate that lingered inside each of them pushed them, one by one and then all together into a vengeful mob towards the palace. >Your father gave you to a pair his Northmen bodyguards, to safeguard and carry you beyond the great river to your Aunt who had married one of their Kings. >>6452390The White Hart is a creature of elusivity, and in all the ages of the world few had ever been slain. Across half the continent a hunting party of Elves had chased it: amaranthine riders and horses, tireless but not so swift as the creature they pursued. They passed through the mortal world unseen and untouched, as though the forests, roads, and towns of men were painted on a veil between them. The Hart outpaced them always. They found more pleasure in the ritual of the chase than in the expectation of the kill. Any notion of success had been abandoned long ago. But then the Hart slowed, it caught a scent: something foul, something rotten. Two northmen lay sprawled with their throats opened. Wrapped in cloth between them was a crying babe stinking of a demon's miasma. The White Hart was not a creature of curiosity, it knew only that no taint of hell should be suffered to fester in the wild. It reared above you, hooves high to smash the corruption. It was the first pause the Hart had made throughout the long chase. From the distant treeline, the most skillful marksman drew back his bowstring and loosed, the arrow pierced the Hart through its heart. The Elves trotted forward on their silent horses to admire the kill. All half stunned at the good fortune and also curious to see what had distracted their prey. Like the Hart they too perceived the reeking of hell emanating from the three humans. "Demon born," said the huntsman who had shot the Hart, already fitting a second arrow."Wait." It was the Elf Earl among them who spoke. He dismounted and loomed over you, he spent a long time turning your face this way and that, touching your clothes and then inspecting the dead men. "There is no demon in the child," he said at last. "The stench is on the cloth, and on those dead men beside it. The creature itself is only dirty." He rose. "Nothing a good bath cannot remedy.""And then what?" the huntsman said, not lowering his bow. "We bathe it and leave it for the wolves?""We keep it," said the Lord."Keep it?" another repeated. The Lord looked at them as though the reason were obvious. "We have needed one for some time. You all know this. In a scant few years it will be grown. In the north there are those cave trolls who have begun foraging into the forest, no?” The others nodded “Then it will be a perfect champion to set against them when the time comes."Who knows where it has been. We could take a changeling — ""And go to all that trouble? Deceive some peasant mother, craft a substitute?" The Lord gestured at you. "This one has already been left for dead. It is free."The huntsman stared at you. "It stinks.""It stinks," the Lord agreed. "That is what the bath is for."And so you were taken…->

Another good set of choices for this would be the sword and choosing to be a silversmith sorcerer, sword and sorcery, with the sorcery making up for the lack of Witchsight with a bound spell. Another pretty cool set of choices would be Silversmith Sorcerer with the Cauldron of Gold. We'd always have a minimum amount of cash on hand to prevent poverty, and if we found the greater hoard we could basically have a pure sorcerer build with all our money fuelling our spells with all the jewellery we could ever ask for.

They rarely cooperate and may demand a price; forcing them requires a WIS test and degrades your Doom die.

Might as well lean into our origin and get something that is otherwise impossible to acquire later on.

Alright looks like Witchsight and Elfin Secrets win the vote. VOTE CLOSED.
did QM die during the sack?

I hope this isn't another Wux quest, like the cyberpunk one or the orc antipaladin one. It does follow some similar patterns...
>>6454300Don't think so, but this exact quest premise has been run at least two times by my memory, and subsequently dropped fairly quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if QM doesn't have what it takes to consistently write a quest, whether because of IRL scheduling issues or writer's block.
