You search for happiness.

You fail.

You grasp for happiness.

You fail.

You wish for happiness.

Nothing happens.

The City looms before you, 26 districts lined with endless variants of the same tragic tale repeated ad infinitum. Which of them are you?

>A member of an Office, official organizations comprised of a group of Fixers. A Fixer's role is to take on contracts pertaining to a wide variety of requests, be it combat, protection, investigation, hazard removal and others. Life in The City is dangerous, and life as a Fixer is more dangerous still. Though, it certainly beats the monotony of civilian life.

>Member of a Syndicate. 'Law' is a loose term at best when applied to The City, but Syndicates go even lower. Commonly purveyors of violence, murder, and vast, organized crime, Syndicate gang members create a lot of the problems Fixers tend to try and solve. Unrestrained and highly deadly.

>Employee of a Wing. Each Wing governs one of the Districts. Working under one of the Wings is lauded as one of the most stable positions in the City, though if your work doesn't live up to their standards, you're out. Your life is cushy, provided you don't step out of line...

>A Color Fixer. Only Fixers of extraordinary prowess are gifted with the title of a Color. Among the Colors are some of the most prestigious and powerful individuals in the City.
You have freedom and popularity but find yourself in constant opposition to the most dangerous forces.

You are a Color Fixer.

As one of the best of the best, your prowess has been recognized and rewarded. You've been assigned a Color by the Hana Association, a title of grand renown. You don't lack for strength, wealth, or acknowledgement. It is an undeniable fact that you find yourself better off than a vast majority of the City's inhabitants.

But are you happy, you ask?

You are the Color...

>The Black Death. An apt title for a Fixer whom none of their foes tend to survive. An expert beyond experts in killing and assassination. Anything becomes a lethal weapon in their hands. Idolized and feared. Plagued by the grudges of others.

>The Monochrome Monocle. A Fixer originating from T-Corp's District. An incident involving T-Corp's Singularity tech left them permanently drained of color. Known for being both dapper and wise, utilizing T-Corp equipment to facilitate the manipulation of local time. Plagued by the past.

>The Golden Blade. A Fixer originating from X-Corp's District. Wields the Relic known as Excalibur. The knightly Fixer is one renowned for their heroics and acts of valor. One who is fit to lead. Plagued by hubris.

>The Crimson Staff. A Fixer who came into the profession not seeking money or stability, but battle. One of the more unhinged Colors, who leaps into the deadliest situations with an overjoyed grin on their face. Tough to corral. Plagued by strength.

The White Mage. Constantly referenced as a source of magic existing in the City by Fixer enthusiasts. In actuality, uses technology in their staff to mimic what one might expect of a mage. Seems to have a solution to every possible problem in their repertoire and tackles the most esoteric of jobs. Plagued by reality.

You are the Monochrome Monocle.

…

The streets of District 25’s Nest sparkle and shine with the effort of meticulous cleaning and care. Hours upon hours of back-breaking work was allotted every single day to the goal of maintaining the District’s image. Any less would be an affront to the ones who dine with silver spoons and wear rings that twinkle and glimmer under the light. Everything outside the gilded perch of the Nest might as well be irrelevant to them. Hell, you wouldn’t be surprised if they never spared a thought.

It’s a nice morning, City notwithstanding. And better way to start off your morning than a nice meal and a warm drink? You trod your way over to the nearest diner on the street over. You push the double doors open - black-and-white among blinding light - and simply wait. One. Two. Ah, one person glances over. Three. There’s another one. Four…

…and the entire place goes silent. A sea of gaping faces and starstruck gazes befall you. As usual.

Then comes the gasping, screaming, and subsequent swarming. Also as usual.

“Monochrome Color, please, sign my—!”

“Mister Monocle, my children are HUGE fans—!”

“Sir, if you’d please lend an ear and consider my request—?”

The sight of a Color Fixer inspires a wide breadth of extreme reactions. It of course depends on the specific Color and their general reputation, but for civilians, you can usually count on admiration and awe to be sitting at the forefront. Each Color has their own way of dealing with this reality; some embrace it, some swear it off, and some never make public appearances at all if they can help it.

What’s your attitude in this situation?

>You fucking love it. You’re the type of person who was probably the popular kid in school. You live for the reactions; the hype, the glory, the fans. It’s energizing.

>You’re friendly and cordial. You’ll engage in the whole shebang; signing autographs, taking photos, answering questions, so on and so forth. You’re maybe not as enthusiastic, but you’ll get it done with no complains.

>You go through the motions. Sometimes, doing the bare minimum isn’t all that bad. Having to do this every time you’re in public gets a little draining, and you don’t exactly like to encourage it. It’s not your job, anyway.

>You ignore it completely. You are no social butterfly. They are not entitled to your time, and you simply came here to eat before a long day. Maybe you’ll hear our a request if it’s relevant, but aside from that…

Wonder what our fit looks like, besides being monochrome. Obviously we have a monocle, which makes me think we're rocking something like a Victorian Suit and top hat

I was personally thinking of a bowler hat (not really against a top hat though) and a great coat, dress shirt and vest under.

You go through the motions.

Generally, you go into autopilot for situations such as these. It’s sort of like sinking into a trance during a heated battle, only with exponentially less life-threatening danger. Your hands and feet move with minimal input from your mind, moving to and fro. One swift autograph there, an overly gratuitous photo taken here, rinse and repeat for several dragging minutes that seem to stretch into an eternity. A day in the life.

Finally, you feel the gaggle of civilians begin to loosen, and you catch a bit of room to breathe. You wave a dispassionate hand to clear the path towards one of the booths. Even as you sit, the rubbernecking and discussions charged with excitement don’t cease, but at least you can pretend at having peace and quiet for a moment. A waitress comes over to take your order, so you push everything else from your head.

While munching on a breakfast sandwich and sipping from some steaming-hot coffee, you lay out a list of notes regarding contract requests you were interested in. Over the last few days, you’d done a little research on outgoing requests that might require someone of your prowess. Were you a lower-ranked Fixer, it’s entirely likely you’d be forced into taking the first one you could get your hands on. It’s a competitive business, after all, and nobody down there has a full coffer. Thankfully, you’ve earned yourself freedom from which you can pick and choose what you might pursue.

>One of the Wing Executives of District 25 is very fed up with the growing presence of the Syndicate, the Middle. One of the Five Fingers, the Middle is obsessed with the concepts of family and vengeance. The Syndicate has a whole lot of weight to toss around, and the Executive in question is concerned about the influence they exert over the District’s Backstreets and the threats they’ve levied at the Nest. A Finger is no idle threat.

>The Mountebank Office of Fixers is in a panic after two of them were kidnapped by a previously unknown and organized gang of Bloodfiends. Bloodfiends were all once human, but post-infection leaves them as mind-warped, blood-sucking monsters. Nowadays, there are entire Fixer Offices dedicated to hunting them down, but either there are none anywhere close, or this request is enough to spook even the hunters. Mountebank’s desperate enough to risk incurring extreme debt to get to the bottom of this.

>A group of researchers have discovered an underground tunnel; one of the many passages leading into the Ruins sprawling out beneath the City. The few Fixers they’ve hired haven’t helped them get very far, so they’re willing to shell out for someone guaranteed to get the job done. The Ruins are packed with odd and wondrous things such as the powerful objects known as Relics, but are also extremely dangerous - crawling with all sorts of odd beasts and monsters henceforth unexplainable. These researchers would very much like to explain them.

You go for the Ruins request.

…

You don’t happen to encounter any trouble on your way to the research site, save for a few wandering eyes. The tunnel itself is situated below one of those fancy penthouses near the center of the Nest. You trod down a long set of stairs into the basement, walking past various recreational rooms. There’s no markers, so it takes you a little while before you duck into a room filled with a group of people in white coats, a real group of eggheads. The hole they surround resembles nothing less than a pit leading into the abyss.

“W-wonderful, you finally arrived, mister Monocle!”

(A Lead Researcher of District 25 - Rob)

Rob is jittering like a hyperactive child. You aren’t entirely certain whether it’s a matter of nerves, excitement, or if he’s on something. Frankly, it might be all three. As his protection detail, it was crucial to keep all the little things in mind. You never know when a small grievance might come back later to bite you in the ass.
“Rob, quit your shaking and back the hell up.” A woman with snow-white hair and black-rimmed glasses practically warps in front of him, shoving an open hand at you.
(A Lead Researcher of District 25 - Edith)
“Monochrome Monocle, a pleasure to meet you. Here’s the finalized contract as discussed.” Edith hands over a laminated document.
You review it very briefly. It’s a basic bodyguard gig; keep them all safe until their scientific curiosity has been satisfied. Essentially, this meant there’d be a lot of standing around and acting as a sentry while they peered at claw marks and strange rocks. The contract also mentions that any Relics or other objects encountered within are to be relinquished to the research team for inspection. Figures.
“Everything looks acceptable,” you reply, handing the document back to her. Edith spins back towards the tunnel and strides swiftly into the hole.
“Excellent,” Edith shoots back, “now, let’s get moving. Daylight’s burning, people!”
So you move unto the breach.
…
The first hour is rather uneventful. It’s a lot of walking, walking, more walking, and surprisingly, walking. A litany of beams from high-power flashlights sweeps the area to purge the oncoming darkness. It was kind of like you were part of a miniature rave, partying through the stony depths. You move at the head of the pack, eyes and instincts trained on the future. The researchers argue with you a little on the position that would leave you in the best position to protect all of them, but you assured them; it mattered little.
You finally come to a stop, with the researches fanning out to inspect the surroundings. The tunnel opens up into a wider chamber. Blue veins of light mark the walls, sprawling across the stone with no immediately identifiable pattern. Plants with purple leaves and black flowers sprout from between the cracks in the ground underneath. Beyond the chamber lies… more darkness.

“W-we made it about this far on the last expedition. We were getting ready to document everything nearby, with uh, with the Fixers standing about where you’re standing right now,” Rob says, waving a lanky arm in the direction of the darkness yet uncharted. “Then uh… well…”

“They were promptly decapitated,” Edith butts in, kneeling near a spiky, glowing plant. “The creatures who ambushed them were small, extremely fast, and wielded scythe-like protrusions for arms. We lost a few of our number too thanks to the sheer incompetence of those Fixers.”

“Why didn’t you hire a big gun from the start? Could’ve saved you a lot of trouble,” you ask, already knowing the answer.
“Why waste money?” One of the other researches pipes up. “I mean… we didn’t know how dangerous it would be, obviously.”
Only it wasn’t exactly unknown how dangerous the Ruins could be.

“Well you know what they say: ‘Never hire a Fixer Grade 5 or above for a real job’ eh fellas?” one of the others quip while grabbing samples. A few too many of the researchers laugh in response.
Before you respond, the scrapes of skittering claws echo in the distance.
“Contact,” you mutter, gesturing widely for everyone to shut up, pay attention, and back up. The scrambling sounds come closer by the second. You squint, but the stretching blackness is too thick to make any headway. You grumble, reach into your waistcoat, and pull out a cane too long to realistically fit inside it.
The cane’s constructed of a material that resembles hardwood drenched in jet-black enamel. Dials, switches, and buttons decorate the surface of the implement, each armed with its own unique function. Engraved on the bottom of the cane is a capital W. At the top of the cane lies a small, classical clock, ticking away without a care in the world. It’s a comforting sound.

The first of them springs forth out of the darkness, screaming bloody murder.

You twist one dial with your thumb and suddenly the world slows down.

You take one step to the side as the field emitted by your cane leaves you with more time than anyone could ask for. The Ruins creature is still lunging, only moving in slow motion now. It’s exactly as Edith described: small, aggressive, nasty little buggers. It resembles a gerbil if they were injected with mass evil and given massive blades just for the fun of it. Not something you want to get caught alone by as a less competent fixer.

With one tap of your staff, the creature’s head explodes like overripe fruit.

(2/)
>>
>>6472812
“See, now that’s a proper Fixer for you!” one researcher gushes.

“W-wow, nice work, mister Monocle. I couldn’t even see the movement,” Rob says, putting away a plastic bag with some stones on it.

“Yes, yes, very nice,” Edith grumbles, hitching a bag over her shoulder. “Let’s keep it moving. I want us back by sunset and there is likely a LOT to cover.”

Deeper into the tunnel you go.

The next few hours are fairly uneventful, monsters aside. You aren’t all too deep even now, and no monster you meet really exceeds the scythe gerbils in danger. The researchers seem increasingly pleased as time goes on and their bags fill up, though not much of anything really seems to show on Edith’s face. You couldn’t get a read on her other than her being excessively focused on getting shit done. You’re brought out of your thoughts as you emerge into the biggest clearing yet.

Crystal stalactites hang overhead, illuminating the massive chamber with rays of stained light. There’s a slope leading downward to what look like… houses? You can’t recognize the building material; in fact, it’s like your eyes simply start to slide away anytime you focus too hard on the houses themselves. Strange, but you’ll leave discovering the specifics to the eggheads. Only one problem immediately comes to mind: there are already people down there.

From the white cloaks and matching dark clothing, you immediately identify the new group as members of the Syndicate, the Index. One of the Five Fingers, The Index follow Prescripts - messages either physical or digital sent by the ones they worship. Prescripts are sometimes seemingly nonsensical tasks, all set towards furthering some goal somehow. It was all very mysterious.

“T-the hell? Why’re they here?!” Rob whispers frantically, looking between you, the researchers , and the Index members down below.

“Obviously because they got told to by their little papers, right?” another researcher says. “But we have a Color!”

“Monochrome Monocle,” Edith looks into your eyes, expression flat. “You can deal with this, correct?”

>You’re going in, cane swinging. You’re not gonna let some Syndicate goons deter or scare you. You’re a Color, for god’s sake. Get them running out of here.

>You're gonna go chat with them first. Zealots are almost impossible to convince otherwise, but you might learn why they’re here and other interesting little factoids if you dig a little. Maybe they’ll respect your presence?

>You’re going to urge the researchers to avoid this area. Not out of any fear for yourself, but because there’s a risk of them ending up in the crossfire of a fight.
>>
