Why do a lot of elderly people (75+ but especially 90+) seem unafraid of the reaper? A lot of them seem totally okay with dying at that point. Does life just suck so much when you're that old you're willing to chance oblivion or heaven/hell?

being that age is terrible

Some of them even ask for death.
I think being that old is just hell for a lot of people, their bodies betray them, their mind can even betray them if they have dementia or Alzheimer's, it's brutal.

I'm about 50 and totally unafraid of death.
If I leave this plane tonight it would be fine.
Death is not really a drama, and life is not very good.

It's because they know they've already lived their lives; some have nothing to regret, and if they were to die, they would do so in peace.

Young people are terrified of death because they haven't lived anything and that scares them :3

Yes it's probably just a natural biological thing
It's kind of like how many animals have the instinct to go away from home and die peacefully alone when they reach old age
Animals have probably just evolved to accept death when they get older because it is actually beneficial at that point

Yes.

I watched my maternal grandparents die of old age. Weak, tired, half-blind, half-deaf, toothless, body aches, arthritic hands that can't even grip a pencil, rashes, and everyone they used to know is dead.

And when you're almost done, it's just hell. You need help to stand up to go to the bathroom. One fall, one little slip and you break 3 bones and get a $50k hospital bill you can't pay. You start to forget where you are and what you're doing there. Pre-death or whatever you want to call it is a living nightmare. It would be kinder to Of Mice and Men someone than let them experience that. Honestly we should.
