Silent HIll 2 is really just about the experience of being a man. Bottomless self loathing. A desire for affection that becomes uncomfortably intermixed with your libido. The experience of being expected to take anything that happens to you without ever showing an any negative emotions, else you are forever labeled a monster. Having people constantly guilt you for having any desires at all.

It's also the intersection of "horror fandom". If you pay much attention at all, you will immediately notice that, despite slasher movies having in the past been considered juvenile, only appealing to 13 year old boys, for their excessive violence and gore, cheap sex appeal, and shoddy writing, the people most obsessed with them is almost always women these days. High concept, emotional, psychologically focused horror is almost exclusively engaged with by men, despite women supposedly being "the sympathetic gender" and "more in tune with their emotions". Silent Hill 2 bridges that gap because woaw cool monster, which has led to a slew of women larpers pointing to Maria and going "wow shes just like me", and coming to the conclusion that James is an emotionless sociopath despite supposedly "loving" the game.

Another game that showcases this just as well is Mouthwashing. Despite its entire premise being feminist critiques wet dream - it's literally about how 'even the hot, nice guys can enable rape culture' - the fanbase is almost entirely freaks, with a lot of men going to bat for it. Why? The devs made a bunch of non-canon shitposts and told their fans not to sent death threats to artists who draw porn. Since the game doesn't have a tall monster man, doesn't have a bunch of cheap horror elements, and the most 'heroic' character is a fat bald guy who's kind of an asshole, women don't actually give a shit about it.
