Due to the significantly different dating market in their time, men actually were passing over mid girls and just trying to get the hot girls, and then eventually settling for the mid girls. It was kind of the opposite of the modern dynamic.So it's mostly out of ignorance. They genuinely don't understand that things have flipped around. I found this out when my father and I were discussing dating to try to come up with some kind of strategy for me to get a girlfriend; he told me about how in bars, men would all be gathered around the hottest girls and the mid girls would be sitting around wishing someone would approach them.
