What does /r9k/ think of birds? I learned today African Grey Parrots may be able to understand English as well as a small child. Have any of you owned a parrot? Is it rewarding and satisfying?

it'd be cool to have a pet who can say good morning and speak broken, but understandable English. I'm not good at talking, I can't hold a long conversation with a human being because of some disability, or I'm socially stunted and never learned.

Short conversations with a parrot who likes me actually sounds great.

I want to try owning one, but my mom won't let me get one. She's fine with cats and reptiles and dogs.

The Hycinth Macaws (Deep Blue Parrot) is more beautiful but not as smart.

At the risk of sounding like a psycho I'm curious what would happen if you took one of these "speaking" animals and then you locked it in a room with no food or anything. How would it start behaving after certain lengths of time?

in regard to parrots, they'd eventually become extremely stressed out (and depressed) and begin ripping out their own feathers.
they already exhibit that behavior when they're left in a cage for extended periods of time. smaller parrots find it easier to entertain themselves, but anything larger than cockatiels and they'll show physical signs of distress if neglected

Bird, Parrots in particular are unfathomably based.

I read they may pluck out their own feathers, but why would you want to hurt a bird who loved you and can even speak to you and understand you?

Every good for nothing SHITBIRD is descended from good for NOTHING dinosaur pieces of shit that hunted our based mammal ancestors and terrorized them. TOTAL BIRD DEATH. You don't want a bird parrot as a pet. For one they're not at all domesticated and shit all over the place while screaming constantly and tearing up all your furniture. For two they can live for up to 80 years, so you'll basically be agreeing to have a permanent toddler than can fly and has a bolt cutter on its face for as long as you live.

If you want a bird then I'd recommend one of the domesticated species like canaries or pigeons, or you could get some poultry for your backyard like ducks or chickens if you want your pets to be useful to you. However if you really need a parrot, then I'd suggest a budgie as they're the only parrot species that has been kept for long enough to be considerer semi-domesticated, they can even talk a bit if that's all you care about, just make sure you get a pair of them so they don't get lonely.

they are man's best friend, a lot of fun and intelligent but they live very long so only get one if you can take care of it forever
