Traveling seems stupid, but that's just misunderstanding. Travel is a high level form of conspicuous consumption. If designer fashion like Patek Philippe is too low class, you travel instead. It's a way of wasting money on something extremely stupid and worthless, but you're above material goods like leather or metal. It's wasting money purely for the purpose of displaying to other people that you waste money. The only thing that could possibly be cooler than travel is "sinking", buying expensive alcohol at a fancy bar and instructing the bartender to pour it down the sink.
