Lain is just Lain, the same way Madotsuki is just Madotsuki, not very relevant even when it was first published, but because it's a girl and her character and the story is written quite ambiguously, you can make it about whatever you want. The only definite aspect of Lain's character is that she's totally absorbed into the computer she gets as a gift. The only definite aspect of Madotsuki's character is that she kills herself at the end. Take of this what you will.

I think the personification of 4chubs is supposed to be Yotsuba, but everything changes over time. It was the ragecomic guy, then the frog, nowadays I think you'd have to draw the basedjak with the Yotsuba haircut to really give the impression of "4chan."
