Why was this show such a big deal when it came out?
Mainly just because of KyoAni. They were still a huge deal and the Chads of the anime world in 2015. If J.C. Staff or something made Hibike Euphonium and it was absolutely identical to KyoAni's version, it would have been a sleepy cult classic.

At the time it was one of the bigger anime of the year, and it still was during 2016 since Season 2 had been announced to air in the fall. Maybe 2017 too since S2 was so recently. Past that it mostly fell off. Season 3 aired in 2024 but that was way after the iron was still hot, nobody except diehards really cared anymore.
