I've been living in Vietnam for 11 years. There was a huge cultural and political shift in 2025 with the appointment of To Lam as general secretary of the Communist Party. He's formalizing their economy, cracking down on corruption, and investing in new infrastructure like airports and financial districts. Basically he wants to do for Vietnam what Xi Jinping did for China, transform it from a 'come one, come all' economy that competes through low barriers to FDI into a much stricter, more nationalist environment that competes through high standards.

I support him because I own property here and my son is a citizen, but other English teacher types are all trying to move to Thailand. While I spent the last few years working my way up to an American salary and a serious marriage to a woman my age, they were using Vietnam as a playground to do drugs and fuck Asian girls. I'll admit I enjoyed those pastimes too, but now I'm in a really good position because I'm hard to replace at the expensive international school where I work. You can no longer just be good-looking and white to get a teaching job, which shrinks the labor pool quite a bit. This is no longer a fun place to live. The locals are more hostile and the party is harder to find. I was treated like a rock star when I first got here, and now I'm being treated like a grown man who teaches fourth grade, which is fair cause that's what I am.

Economic crisis due to relying on imports for 99% of their oil. Jews and Trump going to war with Iran is ass-raping SEA finances. Big love to my niggas in the Philippines.

Based. Vietnam is right not to let itself be transformed into a white man's cum dump like Thailand and Philippines

Will this push to formalize Vietnam into 'larger Singapore' work as well for them as it did for China? It's a step in the right direction for sure, but the culture needs to move forward too, not just the institutions. Vietnamese people are frankly not as intelligent or as serious as the Chinese. The promise of a growing middle class will elude them until they learn to raise their standards.

I'll use my teaching experience as an example, but pretty much every aspect of Vietnamese life can be characterized as follows.

I got my start in Vietnamese schools, and I'm very glad to work for a foreign international school now. Every year that I taught in Viet schools, the kids got dumber and naughtier. When people started being able to afford tablets and smartphones and stuff is when they it fell off a cliff, because that gave lazy parents the opportunity to abandon childcare completely. It didn't matter if I was teaching English at a public school in the boonies or expensive private schools in Saigon-- The results were exactly the same. The kids couldn't sit still. The administrators refused to discipline them. The parents were furious to find out that paying extra for English classes didn't magically make their kids fluent and that actual work was required, or they were somehow satisfied with their year ten student being able to say 'my name is' and 'where are you from.' Sometimes I watched the local teachers doing their subjects, and it was completely asinine. The textbooks were time sinks with no meaningful content, slapped together by an author team chosen for their government connections. Math was the only subject they could teach, because it benefits from rote memorization and repetition.

The same can be said about going to the bank, any government office, hotels, restaurants, etc. People take no pride in their work because they don't get paid shit, which is of course a chicken/egg problem. They have to work together to overcome this attitude.

In summary I love my home, Vietnam, and hope they achieve the best future. I'm proud of the progress they've made, but I want them to stop blaming the rest of the world for their problems and start looking inward. That's unfortunately looking unlikely given how poorly gen alpha is being raised. I recommend to them a new focus not only on institutional standards but on media and art. These people need inspiration to realize the potential of To Lam's investment program.

Off to dinner now, cheers SEAfolk.

I agree completely, but with the caveat that VN also needs to accept that white people have some pretty good ideas:
>stop popping out child after child you don't have the money to feed or the time to educate
>stop doing the bare minimum in every aspect of work and family
>stop drinking and smoking so much and legalize weed which is a far healthier alternative
>if you do get rich, reinvest that in your own country, not in sending your children abroad and hoping to live on remittances (HUGE barrier to middle class growth)
>read a book sometime

>stop popping out child after child you don't have the money to feed or the time to educate
The fertility rate is falling all over the world, having fewer children or adopting the one-child policy like China which is still paying the price would be a terrible mistake
>>
>Stop drinking and smoking
>Legalize grass for subhumans
He was so close to the based.

Ladyboys.

Hey man I like them all but objectively only one of the three is safe to consume, and that's the only one that's illegal.

Weirdly weed was quasilegal until To Lam. You didn't even have to be all that discreet. I knew locals and foreigners who got caught with it pre-COVID, and most of them didn't get in trouble. The police were only interested in meth, which was a big problem at the time.

Malaysia is having a similar shift. It's becoming very hostile to foreigners

Some unique facts since nobody's mentioned them so far:
>Cambodia and Thailand were just recently at war with each other a few months ago over a disputed border region, Thailand was winning before the ceasefire came into effect
>Myanmar is currently in an extreme state of civil war with many different factions supported by different countries like India, China, the US, etcetera
>Indonesia has been cracking down heavily on their region of West Papua which wishes to become independent since they are far more similar to Papua New Guinea as a people than the ruling Javans
>The Philippines has had an active communist insurgency problem for the last 60 years that's still ongoing, it's highest intensity is in the eastern and southern islands

Yeah it's becoming increasingly unsafe for tourists in SEA and nobody is talking about it

Really depends on the country, but the whole region is about to get shit on by this Iran fiasco. What effect do you think fuel price inflation and economic contraction will have on these violent hotspots? Never been to any of those countries myself.
