It's kinda crazy. I can remember a time when someone beat darksouls with dying. It was considered an insane feat that took years after the games release for someone to come along and do that. After Elden Ring released, someone did a deathless run of it within a month, and a no hit run came next not too long after.
It's apart of the attention economy man. The challenge of the game itself isn't sufficient to make people care so people will impose various handicaps "Can you beat X without using Y???" so that people will pay attention.
So yeah the internet ruined things because it made grinding and theorycrafting easier while also giving a massive insentive to do so when large popular video websites became the norm
