You are correct though, there are many sources you can draw these truths from, and so long as they are morally correct, then you're fine. I choose to draw them from the Bible purely for cultural reasons, but many Buddhist/Daoist teachings and the like will lead you to the same conclusions

It is uncomfortable especially in the modern world, but we aren't in control. We didn't make this universe, we didn't make the laws of reality or anything. And we will never be in charge. It's scary but you have to look at what the truth is and go with that. Jesus rose from the dead and you can investigate that on your own spiritually historical journey. God is offering life or death in the way he offers it. And I don't see it being a problem with offering eternal life through forgiveness raher than "well I guess you're good enough." I'm glad it's not that way, because what's good enough for Paradise?
