When people say they feel bad for people they never met, it can be one of three or four things.1. Performative like you said.2. Intellectually but not emotionally: you can recognize the tragedy of mass loss of life without feeling it emotionally. They probably simply lack the vocabulary or intelligence to articulate this complex feeling adequately.3. They are projecting onto it. "If this happened to me or my friends I would feel so bad!" which is true, but the emotional angle here is coming from "what if the situation was different!" rather than "what the situation actually is".4.
