Yes. It's because mothers project their insecurities and fears onto their kids. Scared because the husband you chose was abusive? Better shit test the kids to see if they're abusive, and if they show the slightest amount of self respect, then crush it so they never get to be independent. Some even develop a certain kind of co-dependency with their kids. So much for the empathetic gender.
