If you probe with things like, "oh my parents would kill me if they found out about us", to see how they react it gives you an idea of what their personality is and what their motives could be and so and so forth. Obviously, not all older men are predatory in this way, however, when there is such an age gap, that's when you need to start asking about the why for both parties. It's not like intimacy can't exist with an age gap, but if it was my niece, I'd be doing a lot more active vetting of these men.
