The forest I live in will likely cease to exist within my lifetime. The whole region was forested ten thousand years ago, and has been drying out since. The forests have retreated to a few tall mountaintops. Areas of the forest that have burned in recent decades have not regenerated, as rainfall is inadequate for the trees to reestablish themselves.
