I've been wanting to try raw meat for a while since it looks good, but I can't get over my fear of e coli. My family has always cooked meat extremely well done. The only raw animal products I've eaten are raw eggs, and sushi and smoked salmon. The safest semi-raw meat dish looks like blue rare steak where you just sear a steak a bit and its mostly raw on the inside. I read that raw/rare ground beef isn't safe unless it's ground from a seared steak on premises. I live in Canada where there's a pretty strong culture of cooking everything well done.If I ever go to Europe I'd want to try steak tartare and mett since it seems to be normal there.
I do this though I'm not german. My country has high food standards so the risk of parasites is very low, and if I (against the odds) do catch something I can probably get rid of it in a week without even asking for a prescription. Raw meat tastes good and feels nice to eat. Just having it on bread is quite pleasant. Don't know why the germans get mockery for this dish.
