because even though you'd be able to get the hang of it within a week they wouldn't have much trouble finding a wagie who's been doing it for most of their working lives

They're adding special barcodes now at a local shop that print out once an item is purchased, and you need to scan them at the door to leave and have it open. There's a person there if you were just looking around. They might have invented something that will become mainstream. Maybe they patented it.

its simple. the pool of possible cashiers is so big that stores can picky with their employment criteria

I have cashier experience and I still can't get them, but Indeed is dead and I just stopped using it recently, so no job I applied to using Indeed is even valid as far as im concerned, they were probably all ghost jobs.
Just find one place and try to get in and apply on their company website.
