At what point the benefits of a longer barrel start to diminish probably depends on the round. More powerful round = longer barrel necessary for good performance. So if it's a really heavy rifle round, a really big gun would probably shoot it really big time, and a regular gun shoot it worse than normal. Or so I'm guessing with no knowledge of the topic
