There is plenty of Christian missconception, specially in the modern church. But Christ didn't told his followers to ignore their issues and pray.
Christ teached how to live in Earth as for the wish of the Father. His teachings were a guide to how live a trully happy life and find fullfilment for your soul. The Earth is full of people who abandoned God, and they are the ones who cause the suffering to infest this world.

Do not step away from God's love because of those who don't understand his word. Study the bible, open your heart for his love, ask him for peace, ask him for help with your issues. God will help you, but only if you seek him through the Bible, which shall be your guide.

The Bible has multiple genres and objectives. The old testment is in it for us to understand the history, to signal the prophecy of the perfect Lamb and to understand what we are living today.

Jews have a bunch of parts of the old testment on the Torah, they still follow the Old Law because they denied Christ. Christ and what succeed his sacrifice are in the new testment, and that is the New Covenant Law.

It's hard to understand the Old Testment because you gotta have historical context of what you are reading to trully understand it.
