I'm not a big fan but I watched it and read the manga. It's something special and was the blueprint for the shonen genre. Also the first 25 eps or so are generic, but when they start learning about nen (chakra/ki) it speeds up rapidly. Just give the first 2-3 arcs a try, and the fourth arc has some of the best characters and plot in anime history.
