Why haven't we bred a species of miniature elephants that stay the same size as a baby elephant? I want one as a pet, but regular elephants are too big.
>>
the point of elephants is that they're huge transportation/war animals (at least traditionally)

this is like breeding a slow cheetah

Look up the borneo pygmy elephant

Same reason we've been unable to domesticate elephants despite people taming and using them for millenia, they age and give birth way too slowly to properly selectively breed them for anything. Not to mention the unholy costs of housing and caring for an entire herd of elephants being astronomically high even for royalty.

Book John Hammond is that you?

Movie Hammond was also a careless asshole, just less overtly so

They're not even sexually mature until they're at least 12 or 14 and it takes two goddamned years of gestation between insemination and birth.

Even if we started 1000 years ago we wouldn't have made much progress compared to like dogs who are ready to have puppies when they're one year old.

The purpose of dogs is that they track game and criminals and herd animals. The purpose of cats is that they eat pests.
