Authentic human-to-human exchanges became less frequent, less visible, and harder to find. Internet activity has shifted toward passive consumption, algorithm-driven feeds, automated systems, rather than meaningful conversation. Fewer and fewer participate in open discussions, write thoughtful posts, or build communities.This is related to, but different from, Dead Internet Theory. Dead Internet Theory argues that the internet is increasingly filled with artificial activity: bots, automated accounts, algorithms, and AI-generated content replacing human-created material. Internet Halt Theory focuses instead on the decline of human participation itself. Dead Internet Theory asks, "Are machines replacing humans online?" Internet Halt Theory asks, "Are humans withdrawing from online interaction?"The two ideas may reinforce each other. As AI-generated content increases, online spaces may feel less authentic, causing people to participate less. Reduced human activity then leaves more space for automated content, creating a feedback loop.Possible causes:>The rise of AI bots and synthetic content.
