Looking back, I don't think it's even the genuine resentment required for you to call it "vindictive". She just simply saw a golden opportunity to make connections by playing victim (ingroup/outgroup politics) and took it since otherwise she'd have nothing else. She did something like this back in high school to her female former childhood best friend; hell that friend's dad once warned my parents and I about her and we didn't believe him since we thought it was some PTA politics manipulation.
The saddest thing IMO is that she didn't even need to do this if she wanted connections. She was clearly an intelligent and capable person considering both of us got through the same high rigor program that a good 99% of the incoming freshmen would have been filtered out of.
