The US works ~13 hours more per month than Japan. It's an extremely safe country, so that seems pretty nice.

I know nothing about their shakai but they have had their pack of punk rockers. But I'm not sure if japanese society rewards counter culture. Western societies rewards individuality so being different and non comformity is le hecking cool, but I don't think that's how it works in Nippon.
