Innocent human life has always mattered very little in Russia. Take the Beslan School Siege for example. Terrorists took over a school and held 700+ people hostage. Instead of negotiating, the Russian military opened fire with tanks and machine guns, indiscriminately massacring hundreds of civilians, many of them children.

That's oversimplification. The Soviets DID cause many unnecessary deaths of their troops and did not really care to minimize losses, but their liberation of Soviet land wasn't due to stupid meat wave zerg rushes of the kind Russia is doing in east of Ukraine today. Soviets held massive industrial advantage over Nazis and had better weaponry, more artillery, more tanks, more of almost everything that worked as a power multiplier. And they were supported by the allies. Hundreds of thousands of trucks, among other things, were a part of Lend-Lease, and that was essential for Soviet logistics.
