There's many forms of it and a popular form its shaped in looks like a clam shell, which they call a "concha".I know 2 Mexican bakeries in a neighboring town and that they sell all of these sweet breads, donuts and cakes for a 1 dollar or 3 dollars each. When I went often to the strip mall where they were located, there was usually a torta employee who throws out a whole bag that never gets sold or went stale. That implies that possibly only selling to thier demographic (occasionally also to poor people around the area), those bakeries sell all of this shit at a loss. The only mass buyer that I know of is my local Catholic church. I tried them once and they were a little mid, but its a sugary desert so it'd be very easy to binge on them. Coupled with how cheap Mexican vendors are apparently willing to sell these things (even through an oil crisis right now) and you'll see one connection as to why they're so fat.
