What other reason would there be and why would western revisionists talk about a clear, motivated and reasonable goal like that? There are already too many people who think they would try to invade the US proper and destroy it in European-style total war. They needed resources to fight their other conflicts, the US was blocked them from it, so they had to gamble on a quick decisive victory leading to immediate truce and concession (which was a doctrine that had succeeded before).

At its peak the Japanese empire was impressive in size, but they had no supplies and were hoping to steamroll the orient until they finally had stable and secure access to rubber and oil. The older a book is the more I believe it, it's a lazy heuristic but it has served me well if nothing else just because the sentences feel better.
