So it explores more mature themes about the passage of time and the value of connection and humanity. You should give it a chance, it's not some mistake that it dethroned FMA Brotherhood. It might not end up being your cup of tea, but to not watch it, is like being alive when shows like Code Geass, Steins Gate, FMA, Death Note, Monster, etc and not watching them because they were popular. I hate to say this, but you'd be missing out one of those era defining animes

The cooking is a way to relax in between tense moments. It's like how LOTR has peaceful respites (the Shire, Rivendell, Tom Bombadil's house, etc.) so you don't get burnt out on the action. Frieren is very simple, and immature; which is why it's so popular.
Pretty elf, pretty girl, pretty graphics, nice dose of fanservice and its all there needs to be to have stupid goyim in chokehold. There is not a single aspect of this anime save for animation that is over 5/10

Anyway, it's getting critical acclame because it's good in a sea of mediocrity. Is it the greatest thing ever, no. But so much stuff out right now is shit, so something that is above average in quality shines like gold covered in diamonds. It really is that simple. No astroturfing, no need for propaganda to push it, it is just better than slop and therefor stands out.

The show is a slice of life action serious about an elf dealing with the passing of time. The whole show is about growth and not taking your time for granted. Yes there is some action but it's a slower pace than a regular shonen. Personally the theme really speaks to me because I'm not 20 something anymore and it occurred to me how short life really is. I thinks 18 year old would probably find the bright lights and intense pace of something like JJK more appealing but once they're a bit older Frieren will hit like a truck
