But here's a good rule of thumb: go to the hospital for a psychiatric admission if you have to keep a 24-7 watch on somebody if you're afraid they'll do something dangerous to themselves or others. The wife should've been admitted as soon as she started having such an severe episode. I have no idea what it is about mixed episodes or dysphoric mania that makes so many doctors and psych nurses absolutely retarded. It's clearly described in research and even textbooks but in real life it's somehow missed / misdiagnosed more often than just about any other psychiatric situation

The patients are given sedatives, sometimes against their will, and have to see condescending asshole doctors on a regular basis. They can't even bring in books or movies without it being checked because they're worried a psycho could get a horror book and suddenly lose their shit. On paper, in some states, a psych patient can theoretically be released. But here's the other thing. Unlike a pantywaisted judge letting a career criminal go, an asylum admitted patient can only be signed out by psychiatrists who are risking their professional reputations and even licensure on the line. So them being let out happens WAY less often than you think. They've even had a problem where someone pretends to be insane to be admitted and then stops pretending and shows no symptoms of illness but the docs don't let them out anyway, assuming they're faking being better.
