What are the benefits of learning Chinese? We all know that with Japanese you get access to tons of games, anime, manga, movies, novels, music, and other stuff that either isn't translated or takes a long time to get translated.

What about Chinese?

What are the Chinese equivalents? What games, movies, TV shows, books, comics, animation or websites are worth checking out? What kinds of things are people missing out on if they don't know Chinese? It's the most spoken language in the world, so there must be something for everyone to enjoy.

i'm a pirate and crack video games. problem is with a lot of chinese websites/drms is they require ID verification that a lot of the time does not work if you are outside of china and even using private VPNs you will still run into tons of issues. it's honestly a hassle trying to access chinese material if you are a westerner.

if you want to learn something with the same benefits as japanese, just learn japanese. korean is fine but a lot of korean material can be found in japanese anyway.

Chinese government doesn't care about exporting their soft culture aside from spamming LED skyscraper edits on TikTok, and Chinese entertainment industry is kneecapped by their censorship laws so they wont have anything like kpop or anime anytime soon. Honestly the only practical reasons you'd learn Chinese right now if you are a westerner is if you need to do academia/industrial research in AI/biotech/aerospace/clean energy, or if you are a fed

China has a lot of women and some of them are cute. Japan doesn't have as many women and the cute/not cute ratio there is similar to Japan's, maybe worse.

Learn Chinese -> get cute Chinese gf

There's no benefit unless you're either a businessman or Chinese. Taiwan is cool I guess, but it got nothing on Japan and Korea.

film :
- english : Deep Sea (2024)
- pinyin : Shen Hai (2023)
- chinese : censored by the Robot 9000

In 3 years of learning Chinese, that is the biggest shock I've had. I was like, "HOW THE FUCK IS THIS NOT A BLOCKBUSTER GLOBALLY ?"

In France it was the usual western half-ass censorship,
- release in movie theaters (but only in 2 places in the capital city, for 2 weeks)
- make a wikipedia page (but only a few lines, only in 3 languages) (Disney films get 20 pages articles, in 100+ languages)
- reviews : I literally didn't find ANY good review. Boring. Too simple, "the director is insulting us in the last part of the film, where everything is explained." Bad scenario. Not for children, very disturbing, DANGER, DO NOT TAKE YOUR KIDS. (nothing about "crackdowns" and dictatorship and Taiwan. Western censorship is always subtle).
- the mysterious sea monster is called Hi Jinx in the french subtitles. I wanted to find its real name, searching the web in english and chinese). The world wide web was _empty_. But I found ONE good review on a blog.

Graphically, it's the most beautiful CGI film I have ever seen. (think Monet, Van Gogh)

After the film in theater, I was on the moon. The theater was almost empty, mostly chinese or french chinese young couples. All the girls in tears. Outside, I talked to everyone, and looked at people under another light.
It's the story of a little girl abandoned by her mother. She has low self-esteem. Always wearing her red hoodie, sent to the shrink... She's actively looking for her mother. She's sad but not angry. She just wants to prove that she's a better little girl now, than when she was abandoned.
Writer / director famously said : I wanted to squeeze the pus out of the soul.

He did. I watched it 4+ times.

How I discovered this film : a youtube channel, a video about chinese otaku culture.

I really like Taiwan
They never went through the cultural revolution so they still have all the old temples
They have a lot of Japanese cultural influences and brands
>>
I wonder how many people read this thread and still think that all these "anons" spreading bad gossip about China are real, honest people.
Bots and paid Anons : be more subtle.
>>
Don't bother learning Chinese unless you want to live after they invade.

In the name of the people. Cult TV series in China.

It's about local politics, focused on corruption and how the people's prosecutor fights it. How all the small people in China love to help the judicial arrest the corrupt, greedy, selfish politicians and corrupt businessmen. The goal is to protect the shares of the local factory workers (every worker has shares) (edit : in SOME companies, i think it used to be the norm, especially when they opened the economy).
What I especially liked is how the writers wanted to make an honest portrayal of Chinese society nowadays. The rich and the poor. The good, the bad, and the ugly. The yound and the old. It honestly shows how excessive capitalism has corrupted today's Chinese kids : you have to pay to get into the school football team. You pay another kid to do your homework, etc. It's forbidden, but they do it.

Work / life balance is also a central theme. We know how hardworking the Chinese are.
But what I liked best was the "thriller" part, it reminded me of the American movie "The Firm".
Of course, some will say that it's a Xi Jinpig psyop, because he's the anti-corruption president. But honestly, what American series is not covert gay wokist individualist my body my rules habeas corpus propaganda ?

====

How to watch : it's weird, but all the episodes are on youtube, for free, with english subs.
Search for
> In the name of the people EP01 ENG SUBS
If it doesn't work (which is quite likely), search for the Chinese characters, which I can't type here, but I can write the pinyin : Renmin de mingyi, or Ren min de ming yi. Do a web search, and you'll find the characters. Then search the characters on youtube.
Or just look at my image's filename.

Like someone said for video games, it's blocked. For several years I worked under the hypothesis that it was a western firewall, not chinese. But I realized the Chinese do block everything. The reason is they're scared of US cultural invasion. I'm not a gamer, so I don't know this topic well. But take the Chinese twitter (there are several). You can't tweet there if you don't have a +86 Chinese phone number. How do you get this? With a Chinese ID card, with permanent residency. Look at all the bot propaganda ITT. That's what the Chinese are scared of. They don't want their Twitter to be infested with this daily torrent of inflammatory, anti-Chinese, anti-socialist propaganda.

So now what I think is : Yes, they don't let us consume their cultural production. But don't get fooled. They're the little one, facing a huge Moloch, the USA. It's the same reason why they're still very far from allowing full convertibility of the yuan. They're afraid of financial attacks.

They have more than 80% of public companies (in value). The capitalists want to seize that. China is literally under siege. Look what happened to USSR when they started to open their economy... a little.

I have a friend who can play Chinese games... with his wife's ID card. She's Chinese abroad.
pic : you can install the app, but not post.

A bonus of speaking Chinese is you can proofread the youtube english subs.

They're subtly, but heavily censored. For example, "the communist party" becomes "the party".
So who knows who posted the whole series to youtube, and why it's not taken down...

2. for hulijing (or huli jing), the youtube subs say "that foxy slut" (very important in the story)
In fact, it means a fox spirit : a manipulative woman.
The most intelligent thing is that these subs explain tons of cultural stuff : every idomatic expression is explained. I had never seen this in subs.
But as if by chance, for the chinese word for bad, manipulative women, not only is this not explained, it's also badly translated, so that you think they're only talking about a slut. Not a fox spirit. A manipulative woman.

I literally have a list of all that shit. Never published.

In another chinese series on youtube :
Young military guy is too shy to kiss military girl.

youtube FREE english subs,
> We are all communists, don't be so shy !
What she really says is,
> We are all communists, don't be so feudal !

This CANNOT be a translating mistake. This is on purpose. Feudal is a very important concept in Marxist theory. It means, you're worse than a bourgeois exploiter, you're like the old aristocrats (feudal) who were exploiting the bourgeoisie.
