I've started learning a new language, and I was wondering which games are good for picking up new words and phrases. Since you're constantly reading and interacting with text while playing, I think games can be a great way to reinforce vocabulary and help you remember it. Minecraft seems like a good candidate. What other games would you recommend?
>>85304215if you live near europe hop into counter strike and queue into any of DECIX servers
>>85304240>DECIXWhat's that?
>>85304215depends on how much you are wlling to commit to the whole thing.a trick i used to learn a new language was essentially putting disco elysium (or any other narrative driven game) on a language i had no idea about ( i tried with spanish) as the dialogue rolled i tried to make sense of the words and translating it as i played on
>>85304215If you aren't aware already, this is called learning a language by immersion. If you spend most of your day playing videogames then this is a good option, otherwise try incorporating using social media, watching tv/film, etc. in your target language. It might be super frustrating at first since you won't be able to understand anything, but it works for some, especially the japanbots who watch anime all day. Truly, the best option is to incorporate immersion with traditional language learning: immersion is much more effective once you've learned grammar and core vocab to an A2 level. Good luck anon :)
>>85304504Probably an Euro thing
Probably any game that you have a lot of hours in. I bet I could play RuneScape and learn a good chunk of words in a couple weeks just because of how familiar I am with what things are in the game. As long as the game has a lot of text or spoken word you should be fine. Minecraft probably isn't the best because it's not like you're actively reading text or listening to characters very often.
i recommend pokemon. it is aimed at younger audiences, so you could probably manage your way through it, if you were committed.
>>85304717Pokemon only works with Japanese, I think.
Jump and learn
TES: Skyrim is a great way if you know how to mod. Use https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/172027 as the basis. I tried a whole combination with incorporating a LLM to the NPC for more free form conversations in Spanish which worked for a little but was too unnatural in the long term
i learned english with collectible card games and board games. dense, unintuitive language high in jargon. i guess it demanded you actually fully understood the meaning of each word and of the syntax. anyway, i wouldn't recommend only using games. they're quite limited, and either overly focused on language to the point it's a light work of literature, or they're not very focused on it at all and it's not important to understand more than the function of the mechanic that they label. film and music is probably good.
Ideally something with voice acting, push to continue, and a log. For Japanese i played Another Code and 13 Sentinels which has all of those. Having a game script available online too for easy lookups and such is also fantastic.

>>85304215bersonally, i had a phase where i played through the dark souls games in spanish and portugueseand also halo reach lolno estaban doblados en esas idiomas, pero los subtitulos me ayudan conocer a mas expresiones y sinonimos de palabras que ya conozcocuando termine de mis clases de espanol, quizas perdi la motivacion a mejorar, asi se deje mis juegos en inglesyes, i checked this with translate and remembered a few things xd... spanish niggas gonna be vomitinganyways, i would pick text-heavier games with more complex language that you already know in your own language
>>85309060the ones that allows you to choose lenguage
>>85309240Buen espanol I approve
>>85304215Runescape because it's point and click with 1000s of objects labeled.
>>85306801some boomer shit, never touch them>>85304215I like diablo>full text and voice translations for most languages that matter>massive bombardment of text at all times, from common to literary, historical, biblical>you barely have to be able to read any of it to play the game successfully
>>85304215I tried this with WoW then I realized I don't read any of the quests or give a shit about the lore. I did learn some vocabulary from my spell descriptions though.
>>85305635I was thinking of this and wondering if knowing the game too well would be a negative effect. As in I know the line of dialogue in English so I might not feel the need to truly understand what the character is saying since I will remember the gist of it from my last 20 play through.
>>85310177i wouldn't say that games where noncomprehension is inconsequential are good fits for language learning
>>85310481it's not inconsequential, it's just approachable. you will be able to figure out what "strength" and "dexterity" and "dodge" and "damage" are handily, you will accidentally learn "skeleton archer" and a million other creature names. etc. but if your comprehension is sub-100% you can still pull through the content for a mountain of hours
>>85304215Any visual novellas and text heavy games, honestly minecraft is a great pick (with subtitles) aka pig squeels cow moos then move to VNs
>>85304215your favorite RPG has probably been translated into the language you're interested in
