The 1890 house is lost technology. Things have steadily gotten worse over the decades. We simply can't do many things that were considered easy in the past now. The materials don't even exist without special ordering. You'd need a custom sawmill because the big mills that make dimensional lumber can't produce literal 2x4's. Plaster is even more of a lost technology. Horse hair and mud, outside of historical reenactment freaks you won't find anyone who knows how to do it.A big part of it is intentional though. Pretty houses make people happy and proud. Ugly houses make people unhappy. Evil people also genuinely like ugly things seperate from and in addition to making people unhappy.
