maybe this is a longshot to be asking on this board specifically, but im in a real doozy. i really hate my roommate, like extremely. i fantasize about suicide on the regular to escape my situation. every time ive tried to save to maybe look for another apartment in the area or something, some retarded bullshit happens to me. this time it was a tooth breaking leading me to narrowly avoid sepsis and need multiple dentist visits. so now im fed up.how can i get the hell out of here? i have no family to take me in and only one internet friend but he is a neet who lives at home still. i am in california currently but even if i have to go to some shithole flyover state to escape this situation i will. i am also barely financially afloat because of the aforementioned issues above. i just need to find a way out before i lose my mind :(

I know this might seem counter intuitive but NYC can be surprisingly cheap if you can get past the main barrier which is rent. But its actually not that bad outside of Manhattan. Food in NYC is among the cheapest Ive seen anywhere in the USA, actually - you can get by paying like $12 a day for food, just eating out, if you use apps like toogoodtogo and just get cheap food at bodegas (which are SUPER convenient, basically just convenience stores with deli counters, but for some strange reason they aren't trying to rip you off) The big difference of course is transportation. In California you are FUCKED trying to own and drive a car. We have the highest gas prices in the country, combined with the highest taxes / car ownership costs in the country. And you need a car here no matter where you are, it sucksId say the ABSOLUTE lowest cost of car ownership in California is like $200 a month. Thats driving a total shitbox, just going to work and back basically. With insurance, taxes, gas etc, your carrying costs at an ABSOLUTE minimum are $200. In nyc you can very easily get wherever you need to go on the buses and trains and they are capped at $5 a day, so you are spending $150 on transit a month MAX (and you can just jump the turnstiles or not pay and save $150 too lmao) Rent is of course the biggest expense in both California and NYC but its surprisingly comparable. For example rent in Bushwick (eastern neighborhood in Brooklyn) for a bedroom in an apartment might be like 1200 a month, in LA youll be paying about the same. In SF or Manhattan youll pay more of course. How do you pay your rent right now? Why do you live north of sacremento - if you dont have family how did you end up there? Why do you hate your roommate?
>>85425066ah sorry lemme tell you what staying in a hostel is like. I've stayed in dozens across the world actually. Maybe like 30? Some are very social places where you come to find friends, others are just places to sleep for a few dollars a night. They almost always cater to some type of traveler from out of town, almost always a younger crowd.I stayed in a few places in NYC:The first was "NY Moore hostel" in Brooklyn. It's actually a pretty comfortable place, with a nice bed and comfy blanket, quite similar to a very spartan hotel room, only shared with other people. It's not a social environment at all. The location in Brooklyn is fine - it's about a 10 minute walk to the train station, and from there about 20 minutes into Manhattan. The other one I stayed in just recently is Q4 Hotel in Long Island city, queens. LIC is ALL new skyscrapers. While Brooklyn has lots of history and vintage urban developments, LIC is NEW. It's also VERY close to Manhattan, maybe 10 minutes into the city. The hostel is far more social but it's also way less comfortable, being among the worst hostels I've ever stayed at for comfort. They are both around $50 a night. The cheapest rooms you could rent in NYC would be around $36-40 a night. (Monthly rental of course)

>>85425194specifically chico. i was kicked out after high school so my dad could start a business and use my room as an office. i was homeless for a while couch surfing in maryland, then slept in the vegas airport for some time, before finally making my way all the way west all without a car, i wanted to live here really bad in highschool. well as i was making my way up the central valley looking for work i finally found a place that hired me, and similarly i finally found a room listing that was willing to accept me since even though i was homeless i had a job. i guess they were down two roommates at the time and were desperate to fill the rooms (i can see why). so now ive been here for about 4 years, i like it better than both homelessness and couch surfing up the east coast and the transit here isnt perfect but its way better than what i had in florida. ive taken it up and down the state to SF, oakland, sacramento itself, and of course socal. my rent is only 500 since its split between 3 people, which is how ive stayed afloat so far and why ive put up with a batshit roommate for so long. i want to move because, simply put, being a younger dude living with a single older woman is just not ideal for me at all. things that arent a big deal to me like the way furniture is arranged or having to work on weekends are enough to make her rage and argue. my other roommate also stopped working and is freeloading and now they both expect me to pick up financially for her instead of her getting a job, which is just not acceptable. ive job hopped a bit but most places here dont want to hire full time.

They are VERY hard to get apparently. Like you either need connections or need to be a scientist or some other highly trained professional. Tried applying to work at some national parks, but they are also kind of competitive. Much easier than working in Antarctica of course. If you apply during the right season it should be easier to get. I've looked into working in a cruise ship but like you said most of the employees are foreigners and the Americans on board tend to be entertainers. I can't play an instrument or do acrobatics so idk. Aside from the entertainers, they are more "front of house" type management roles which, again, aren't really entry level.
