In ye olde days, pale skin was considered elite and luxurious because it meant that women did not have to work outside, as all of the less wealthy ones did. Nowadays, a tan body is a signifier of wealth and status, because it shows that a woman can just lie on the beach all day, like a luxury diva princess, and they want that sunkissed look even if it comes from a tanning bed.
