AFAICT big muscles seem to be standing in for other signifiers of "physically adult man who can take care of himself" that are structurally closed-off to many young people today, like "having a decent job/career" or "owning a car/house". They see it as (ironically) a bachelor's degree for dating: doesn't make you a shoe-in, but it's necessary to get your foot in the door. (Pun intended.) "No one will even look at me if I don't present a basic front of competency as a man, what are my options for that? Oh..." Whether that perception is actually true, or instead misguided, isn't that a more realistic take on the psychology than a leap to, "I'm getting jacked because women aren't people."?
