I dislike anime because it is very lookist in nature. every character is really beautiful and a lot of their appeal is just that they're cute/pretty whatever

If the characters weren't appealing, it would be much harder to depict sexual tension between characters without being disgusting. The tension when the audience understands it is what makes a show seem to have stakes.
