Actually there was a pretty big flip, before around 2015 eastern memes were considered more esoteric and schizophrenic while western memes were mainly just cats and weird looking people doing silly shit.Then the landscape rapidly shifted once we got the first wave of what we now call brainrot, back then referred to as offensive memes and deep fried memes, as well as stuff like basedjaks and pepes really taking off in the mainstream and it only continued to get more bizarre with post-irony.
