It isn't a social ritual, it's just basic human behavior. When you look at them directly it channels all your communication signals directly at them, and reduces the amount of processing their brains need to do to understand you. It's the same way people hear an accent and immediately turn off their brains refusing to process it. It's not that they can't understand the accent, they're just too mentally lazy to want to even try to that.
