It's like how courage and cowardice both rely on something scary to exist. Good and evil are reverence vs hubris before God and reverence is related to fear through respect. God could also be an allegory for morals. Reverence vs hubris before good morals and fear of justice and the consequences of bad morals. People can be good in absence of justice. The person volunteering at the food pantry could pass up a beggar because they're maxed out even if they might have been able to do something more. Does the beggar where there's one large impact for one person deserve the help or the pantry where it's perhaps dissipated among the masses into a negligible amount where it may or may not be as effective? Whatever the case it doesn't necessarily provide protection. We are all at the mercy of nature
