>Nearly half (47%) of adults ages 18-29 said if they had the option, they'd choose to live in the past
>some members of gen z wish to live in an era "right before social media and computers mediated life," nostalgia researcher and existential psychologist Clay Routledge said in an interview.
>Ben Isaacs, a 20-year-old student in Colorado, said he selected "less than 50 years in the past" in the poll as the period he'd live in if he could choose. Isaacs specifically pointed to the 1990s as a time with "a lack of phones, more personal experience, but also still some of the ease of modern technology."

Were the 90s really that good or were zoomers psyoped hard on this?

>psyoped hard on this?
obviously psyoped. when the entire world grows up around taylor swift obviously it seems better than everything else
>>
>>85576609
Taylor swift is not 90s, her earliest pop songs are from like 2008

>Were the 90s really that good
Many young people were kind of depressed. There was no more interesting vision. The conservative world of the 1950s was just history, the cultural revolution of the 60s and 70s had failed, and the materialism of the 80s had lost it's appeal. Gen X people had nothing to believe in.
But looking back it was way better than now. People were doing things outside instead sitting at home and doom scrolling.

>>85576620
yes but we all had to bend over backward while she grew up

2020's are like the 90's, but better. Nothing prevents goyim from putting the phone aside, for a while. I was into PCs and playing video games in the 1990's and so I am in 2020's. Except tech around me is much better, easily affordable dishwashers, cars capable of self-driving, autonomous robotic vacuum cleaners, anything and everything can be delivered to my doorstep. The list goes on and on.
>I still want the 90's
Dress like in the 90's and stop looking at your phone. Solved.

>>85576602
>social media and having to present yourself online constantly sucks ass
whoa what a shock

the fall of the soviet union was a cause for worry and joy
economically things were hard in my country but we were all so happy communism was gone and we could all come together and focus on the future
i think culture reflected this especially music and youth culture like raves also technology was massively improving, computers and internet becoming available to the common man was huge

I feel like if you asked a teenager in 1995 if they'd rather had been born 30 years in the past or 30 years in the future, most would choose the future, while today they'd answer overwhelmingly in the past.
>>
>>85576655
>Nothing prevents goyim from putting the phone aside,
except literally the rest of humanity you drooling autistic retard
you don't exist in some vacuum devoid of other people and most people want to be social
you will never know what it was like when people used to just hang out irl and talk to strangers
the only people who do that now are drug addicts and everyone is atomized and completely culturally different, down to neighbors having different accents
>>
>>85576663
who does that? among humans, I mean. Seriously. I've been on PC for over 30 years and I've never had a social media account.

>>85576673
>I feel like if you asked a teenager in 1995 if they'd rather had been born 30 years in the past or 30 years in the future
Hm, I was a teenager at 1995, and I was dreaming about 1965, yeah. But no one I knew was dreaming about 2025. We all had a feeling that the future was doomed.

the 90s were peak, the internet was in its infancy and still treated as a novelty but just about popular enough that all your friends had it. it was the computer in the corner of the lounge that maybe you'd dedicate an hour of the week browsing geocities or angelfire sites or whatever.

we'd just go out without notice, knock on some friends' doors and ask if they wanted to come out and smoke some weed in the bushes. someone's parents would be out for the weekend so we'd crash at theirs and not worry about anyone's parents catching the smell of weed on us.

all our first sexual experiences were at like 12 or 13 cos there was literally nothing else to do in the village where we all lived and it only took one of us feeling horny before the contagion spread and we're sneakily taking whisky or beers while the adults aren't looking.

I miss those times. it isn't the same today no matter what that other 'just put the phone down lol' anon says. that still doesn't answer the issue of the fact that everyone else is a zombified tiktok-brained idiot and the social cohesion, social skills etc are all flushed down the toilet nowadays. the average zoomer can't hold a candle to how we were at that age. they'd reach their 40s before they'd experience half of what we had.
>>
>>85576682
>except literally the rest of humanity you drooling autistic retard
I don't. Pretty sure people like Amish also don't stare at their phones 24/7 albeit for different reasons. Point is: it is possible. And easy to do.
>you don't exist in some vacuum devoid of other people
no, but I don't give a shit. I live my own life.
>and most people want to be social
who cares want normie goyim wants. it is here to serve.
>you will never know what it was like when people used to just hang out irl
except I do. People my age don't stare at phones 24/7, esp. at hangouts.
>and talk to strangers
nobody wants to do this. and the reason is that humans suck, I'm not interested in what 90% of them have to say.
> and everyone is atomized
and this is a good thing. I don't care for your butthurt. Thank fuck I don't have to be annoyed by your utter normie retardation IRL.
>completely culturally different, down to neighbors having different accents
yeah, immigration is a problem, but it will be solved or solve itself one way or another. If you're tired of mudslimes and niggers, just get a car and a job fitting a white person.

Yes, the 90s really were that good
>dollar had far more purchasing value, you didn't need two jobs plus a side gig just to barely make ends meet
>getting a job wasn't a monthslong humiliation ritual and you weren't expected to do the role of 3 people for 1 paycheck
>people weren't obsessed about politics 24/7 and ending relationships over how you voted
>ragebaiting and obnoxious attention whoring weren't monetized so people didn't pursue those as careers
>women weren't destroyed by hoeflation and OnlyFans
>no flood of Pajeets and Muhammads invading the West yet, even the Changs and Pacos were much smaller in number back then
>dial up internet was a pain in the ass to use but on the bright side the only people online back then were first world nerds and the websites were interesting instead of walled garden, sanitized corporate websites
>video games actually did creative things and had meaningful upgrades from new tech, today new tech just means 3% better shadows while bloating the game another 50GB and devs don't take risks because the (((executives))) and focus groups wouldn't like that
>also the game devs back then were talented white and East Asian nerds who loved vidya instead of troons and jeets and diversity hires who are incompetent and hate gamers

>the internet was in its infancy and still treated as a novelty but just about popular enough that all your friends had it
this is not true. The internet was expensive, slow, and people had to be somewhat tech savyy. People were priced out. It also did not cater to their normie interests 24/7.

The Nineties (TM) were the absolute zenith of global liberalism. It genuinely seemed like things could only get better, for everyone, everywhere, until the end of time. It was believed that history was essentially over and that the future was a long, steady march to Star Trek, with a few objective "Bad Guys" (Saddam Hussein, the Ayatollah) to put out of commission, then we would all hold hands and enjoy a totally rockin' existence. They were arguably the single best time to be alive. The period of time where freedom, safety, and possibility all came together in perfect proportions.

That being said: they were a flash in the pan and were never, ever going to last more than they did. The foundation of capitalism and liberalism and progressivism and all that we took for granted was too shaky and predicated on too many hidden downsides, too many gambles, and too many invisible hands pulling invisible levers. The future was traded in for the present, and everything was always bound to collapse. If you were offered live in the period between 1980 and 1999 forever, you would do extremely well to accept that offer. MAYBE extend it out to 2007. We are in the doldrums of a collapsing system now, and there will be no great catharsis; there will just be a steady worsening of all things until we can't even imagine a time as good as the nineties.

This is probably too much of an effortpost.

America in the late '60s and early '70s, (but not sucked into the hippie crap, which a whole lot of people weren't. The hippies were very fasionable, with a large cultural presence, but not actually that numerous.) was the time and place to be alive. Cars, land, and vaguely passable medicine were available for pretty sane prices and a single-income household was a fairly attainable thing, but freedom hadn't yet been stamped out. You could still buy dynamite and machine guns, and you could still practically do whatever the hell you wanted to your house and car. No war on drugs yet so chemistry was free too. Clean air act existed, but enough industry was grandfathered in that you could still find a decent job building cool shit, and it certainly hadn't all been outsourced to China abroad and illegals at home yet. You could actually own and fix your shit, and the surveillance state wasn't really a thing outside of large bank transfers.

If I had a time machine, that's where I'd go.

meh, i preferred the aughts

>This is probably too much of an effortpost.
simply sounds like nostalgia of a privileged person. yearning to relive the childhood experiences. I do not share the same point of view, because everybody doesn't live the same life in the same place. Some shitholes were nightmare fuel. You were lucky to have a great life in the 90's, be gratefull for it.
>>
i wont make bold claims about if the 90s as a whole were objectively better.

i can say this with absolute certainty though: if you were a dorky smart kid into technology the 90s internet and computing was unquestionably better. the internet was not full of normies and 3rd worlders, it was mostly middle class westerners into technology and most of them were alt thinking and nerdy in some way like you. learning things like programming and html was much more impactful back then and impressive, even before you take AI into account. security was a joke, you could live out a hacker cyberpunk fantasy IRL with your homies with just basic coding/networking knowledge and moderate intelligence and you always felt like you were on the frontier of technology rather than being a consumer of it.

of course it had its downsides on a technological level. discord is much better than IRC for most uses. dialup was terrible. file/video sharing was a pain. but i consider myself super lucky of all the ages i could have been born on earth i got to grow up during the one with the early internet.

That's addressed in the post:

It was never going to last because it was simply the highest peak possible, reached by repeatedly leaping and exhausting the body of not just the collective west, but the world.

There were some positives and some negatives. Divorce was rampant and a lot of young people were latch key kids(no parents or siblings at home when they got done with school). I don't think the real impact of divorce culture is understood yet.

I think people were happier, but it was kind of a blissful ignorance. There was a lot we didn't know and didn't have to think about because we didn't have immediate access to any and all information.
>>
>>85576784
>because it was simply the highest peak possible
my point is that it was not. My life is objectively better, even financially, in 2020's.
>>
>>85576716
>here's my pitch, a film warning about the dangers of children having sex
>so basically I'm going to need child actors to engage in multiple sex scenes with real nudity
>yeah we're going to do a lot of takes for that one, need to get the lighting and dialog right after all
>I can see the opening scene now, he's slowly taking off the 12 year old's bra and laying her down on the bed...
>plot? Oh I guess it's about, uh, AIDS or something, sure whatever
Was this movie just Cuties in the 90s?

>My life is objectively better, even financially, in 2020's.
Well, good for you, you get to gorge yourself on... whatever it is there is to gorge yourself on now, in a post-truth world. For the average person, this simply isn't the case, thougheverbeitfore.

i was born in 91 and it was an open secret at my school that girls 12-14 were having sex especially at parties and with men 20-30 mostly in exchange for drugs or alcohol but some of them dated those men as status symbols

Life as a state of being throughout a time period has a ton of variables. Some get worse, some get better. I was a relatively poor kid, without a job, in the 90's. I have a job now. It might not be the best paying job in the world, but the working conditions and being able to save money, as examples, immediately elevate the qol to levels never seen by me in the 90's. Tech is simply superior.
And judging by the hundred of million of immigrants, no, the life was not better for the average person either.
I do agree that the qol dropped in some instances, especially for some people, but gorillions of people were lifted out of poverty at the same time. It is especially noticeable in places like China, for example. I understand your point, and even agree to an extent, but it is not true for the average person on this rock.
>>
>>85576802
true. However,
>others should have less and I should have more
>maybe simply because I work a braindead factory job
is unattainable. A thing of the past because of globalism. It is ironic that people complaining about the never ending progress only look at their own circumstance and not at lives of 8b people on the planet.
I'm not saying it's good or bad, right or wrong. Simply pointing out the objective side of things. You're correct, not everything is about a single individual. And so your life getting worse equals somebody else's lives getting better.
>>
>>85576837
>And so your life getting worse equals somebody else's lives getting better.
1. Not true, life is not zero-sum.
2. Every first-world country becoming worse in every way and void of opportunities is not worth the lives of slum-dwellers in Mumbai becoming incrementally better.
>>
>>85576908
>Not true, life is not zero-sum.
this is not objective
>country becoming worse in every way and void of opportunities is not worth the lives of slum-dwellers
not objective either. Which is ironic coming from anons, that turn around, and say shit like
>not everying is about you
kek. This is simply the narrow self-interest animal behavior I always expect from the vast majority of humans. As stated above, this is not right or wrong, just self-centered.
>>
>>85576908
>>85576998
>1. Not true, life is not zero-sum.
oh yeah, forgot to add, that globalism factually did it. West got worse, but East (i.e. SEA) got better. West got worse, but Africa and Middle-East got better. There is indeed a finite amount of resources on this rock. Until we're space mining, etc., the limited shit will be transferred back and forth.
