how poor are you?

im pretty poor but next week i start a job that pays 27 freedoms an hour. most money ive ever made by far at a job. i honestly kind of dont even know what to do with that much im so used to being poor. I still live with my mom so i guess if i keep this job for a while ill be able to move out but rent is so expensive in my city id be afraid of losing all that money. i have an irrational fear of spending large amounts of money because again im so used to being poor
>>
I grew up poor as shit. Utilities constantly turned off. Repossessed cars. No hot water. Stealing food just to eat some days.

I make over 150k a year now as a software engineer. Teachers, parents, and peers who treated me like shit can eat my ass now. I make more than all the faggots who went to college and the teachers who said I was a fuck up. I'm still a fucking loser but at least I can buy things.
>>
I am dead broke. Actually, for-real, can't-pay-bills broke. I have no job and don't even get invited to interviews. The only things I've bought for myself these last years were some cheap paperbacks and a bit to drink.

Lower middle-class. I live with my mother still, she collects two pensions and can cover her expenses mostly. I make $80CAD/Hr but my work is unreliable right now so in a month it can range from 4k-10k CAD in total. Annually, I think I'll make about 80-90k CAD.

I have about 150k invested with a 9.2% growth annually. I recently bought her a car, had to pay to renovate our house, and pay my own rent. But I'm not especially skilled or wealthy so if this job goes, it's probably back to just above minimum wage. Like you, OP, I live in perpetual fear of losing money and never spend on myself. I've never even been outside my country

I grew up in a two bedroom apartment in Brooklyn nyc with both parents and four siblings. The lights were always on and we always had plenty to eat and enjoyed lots of toys and vidya but it was definitely outside the white norm of a nice house in the suburbs where every body had their own bedroom. I am polish btw

Redpill me in one thing.
My brother is also a software engineer, should I be worried that AI will take his job or is this only for people entering the industry right now?
>>
My gf doesn't let me work... She threatened to kill me last time I got a job offer

why are you here?

I have $400k in liquid assets and a total net worth of about $550k. Other than eating better food I still live like a broke college student with my parents. I don't know how to turn money into a better life in a way that feels sustainable and doing anything other than saving feels irresponsible when you look at the opportunity costs.
>>
>>85581985
dont fret youre doing better than most people either first or third world
>>
>>85578949
Me too, went from never having more than 5k in my bank account to be able to save over $30k a year after taxes. Kept living with parents and now I can buy a cheap basic house. Actually pissed off that I could have been doing this much earlier if it wasn't gatekeeping HR women. I think there is enough money for everyone but the BS job interview processes prevents people from getting it. When I was poor I had this delusion that I could buy something like cheap $10k land and just live off that.

>>85579050
They want to put massive taxes on investments here to give it to boomers and their medical expenses.
>>
>>85581925
The truth is, no one knows for sure. We could get a Jevons paradox situation. Or demand for SWEs may drop and those skills/means will become trivial.
>>
>>85582094
financially yes, but in all other aspects I am living groundhog's day. I am slowly rotting away doing the same thing every day for years not doing anything and talking to nobody. It doesn't even make me happy anymore. I stack money up out of obligation, but to what? Securing a future that I'll never have leading life as I do now? Realistically I'm not going to turn 40 and decide that now is the time to live like a person. The most I can be grateful for is that I have security and comfort. All the money in the world will only buy facsimiles of the things beyond that.
>>
>>85582127
I'd pay a tax to turn boomers into fertilizer.
>>
im here for a good not a long time everything is going to shit anyway no one can afford houses anymore im just gonna live comfortably until the day of the rope as i honestly should
