tumblr was initially quite a crazy place. everyone here hated it so i was kind of a closet user of the site lol. i dont really have any memories with people on there since ive always been bad at making online friends. the culture was, looking back, extremely autistic. the people we call lolcows now were basically the whole userbase of that site by 2016 or so. i remember trends like the tumblr sexymen where they would fall in love with cartoon characters and movie characters (sans and the onceler were the big ones). in 2023 i logged into my old account after like 8 years and it really felt like a barren wasteland, like one of those extremely old internet forums where a few oldheads still hang out. bluesky houses most of those types of people now, which makes sense, because you have to walk on eggshells using that shithole as much as you had to walk on eggshells using tumblr. id say it really died when they banned nsfw for that short while.

I was extremely active on tumblr from 2010-2016. I was born in 2000.

The most important thing to know is that it was a space where everyone wanted to get the next viral post. Unlike other social media platforms at the time where the best way to do that was to post insane stunts or sexy selfies, the best way on tumblr was to either make up an outlandish story, or to start the next meme.

I was mostly active in the roleplaying community. It was common to refer to your character as your "muse" and yourself as the "mun." No idea where that came from. Common trends in roleplay were prompts, which would be reblogged and usually acted as a menu of roleplay starters all themed around something, and magic anons which was when someone anonymously sent a prompt to your inbox. An example would be "Magic anon! Your next five posts must be written as a genderbent muse!"
