I live in Edmonton and have found that as long as you keep to yourself the hobos won't do anything back, since most people on the streets are addicted to opioids and specifically fentanyl, except this one time.One time I was nightwalking near the Commonwealth Stadium, a notorious part of town for its homelessness, and this girl ran up to me with her hands in the air smiling and laughing. She was visibly homeless as well so I was kinda shocked but just kept walking and ignored her until she left me alone. Was probably on sort of entactogen that she was on, probably MDMA but given that she was homeless its far more likely that she was on 4-MMC or some other rather nasty synthetic cathinone that was cooked up by a local dealer, probably to fund his own addiction.
