Why is there this strange consensus that men are responsible for women's beauty standards? I've never heard a man criticize women for their choice of handbags, or choice of makeup, color of their nails, or anything like that (unless he's mega-turbo gay and wears these things himself). But they still talk like it's patriarchy forcing them to blow half their income on beauty and luxury products

Lower class men don't care about the specific brand or notice the color but they do give all their attention to women who look better to them, and the standard emerges from that. You can see the same thing with men doing their looksmaxxing meme, they think the size of their chin or height matters, but women don't notice or care about face or height specifically, they just naturally have a preference for men that are handsome. before looksmaxxing, men had the consensus that your shoes and car have to follow a specific standard that women desire, and the only way to become popular with women is to have a certain type of sports car. part of it is marketing sure but the underlying standards do exist. it's not patriarchy, just evolution.
