on more than one occasion i've met people who act all friendly/brotherly and if you're struggling for example they motivate you with empty word salad or pretend that they also have problems that they tell you about. but it's so obvious if you spend any amount of time with them that you don't get to see any of the real things they are up to and are super secretive about anything that could actually help you, and they also tend to disappear when you're NOT struggling, for some reason.
i don't know why they do that, but whatever the reason, as soon as i see it i don't talk to them again beyond minimal courtesy. so far so good.
but these people actually have friends, sometimes they actually make friends super easily. how is that possible? there's no way the others don't notice it, i bet i'm in like the bottom 5% of social intelligence, they ALL notice it. what's a reason to still want to be around someone who keeps you down as much as they can get away with?

Most manipulative people are retarded, like either low IQ or low impulse control/emotional regulation. Or both. So they're kinda seen as angry toy dogs. More of a nuisance than anything.

looking for a job for example, as i am these days. i don't go around harassing randos for a job but since it's a big part of my life right now i'll bring it up, just in case. and when i do there's people who actually remember and tell me about job fairs, places that are hiring etc. that they come across, or contacts that they have. so people who help definitely exist. but i also met people who were all like "yeah man me too if anything happens i'll give you a heads up", they don't, they may ask you how it's going or plan things that they never follow up on, some of them may find jobs at some point, you never hear about it. it was never ever going to be more than pretending to give a shit. and yet people still accept being near them somehow.

okay, i guess that's why they are manipulative, but how are other people okay with that? everyone has people they don't like, how do these go under their radar?
