There were 14,000 homicides in the US in 2025. The rate has actually been trending lower in the last few years. Stringing together a handful of news stories in total covering 0.0001% of total murders could be done to make basically any narrative you want. There are several hundred children under the age of 5 killed in the US every year. Most of the time, nobody bats an eye for more than a moment, but because of how the news media apparatus works, now you think it's a crazy new surge or something. News stories about individual events can't tell you basically anything about the broad trends in society until you're synthesizing 1000s, probably 10s of thousands, of them.
